Question:
I had my Lap Band surgery a year ago and I've lost 80 pounds. My problem is I stay

so cold all the time. The Dr did blood work and everything is normal. Is anyone else freezing out there?    — Judy T. (posted on March 13, 2010)

I've lost a significant amount of weight twice in my life, and both times I was cold all the time. I hate to use this analogy, but I think it's like the whales and walruses... the huge layer of fat (blubber) that they build up is what keeps them warm in the freezing arctic waters. It works the same way with us. The huge layer of fat we carried around "insulated" us and kept us warm. I've lost nearly 140 pounds in the past year, and as I speak, I am sitting at my computer with a warm jacket on over a long-sleeved turtleneck sweater, and I'm comfortable except for my cold hands.

I agree with Erika...I am cold all the time! I am 12 lbs to goal and do not ever remember feeling this cold. We ran a 5K yesterday and I wanted to wear a down coat..LOL. I am noticing it more the lighter I get and I feel it has a lot to do with the insulation that I no longer have...AND WANT BACK...LOL. Congrats on the 80 lbs...WOW!

Funny that you brought this one up this week. I live in the mountains in Utah and the cold never used to bother me. The other morning I drove my husband to his carpool at 6 am and just slipped on flipflops and no coat even though there was still snow on the ground. It was a bit colder and more humid than normal and I got home and could not warm up. I crawled in bed and piled blankets on but started shivering and vomiting. I called my daughter on her cell in my basement and told her I thought I had a problem. She piled on more blankets but I got worse. She thought I had hypothermia and called my husband home from work because she couldn't miss work and thought I shouldn't be alone. I was pretty out of it and don't remember it all but this would never have happened when I was heavier. Since surgery I wear slippers most of the time and that helps but I guess I will be more careful when temps are extremely cold.

Judy, Welcome to the club! I had lapband 8/2/08 and have lost 96 pounds so far, with maybe 10 lbs to go. My doc explained it this way: You had lots of layers of fat (padding) to keep you warm, now you have lost those layers so your bodily systems have to adjust (like a thermostat). It make take a year for that to happen. Marti in San Jose

I agree with the blubber insulation theory, however I would certainly tell my phys about any extended episodes being cold. It's one thing to be a little more chilly than your pre-surg self. It's another to be freezing when you have on layers and layers of clothes. Check your blood levels for aneimia also.

Hi! Yes it is normal to be cold. Everyone I have talked to has said they are cold, I am usually, but I have been having hot flashes lately...lat me tell you..I'd rather be cold! I live in upstate NY and the winters are frigid and I think about moving south, but then a hot flash hits...and no way..I am not leaving to go where it is hot all the time. I can not handle the heat! lol Best of luck to you on your journey! hugs N God Bless, Kim

I had my surgery in Jan 09 and I am always cold now too. I get so cold sometimes I want to wear mittens sitting in the house.
