Question:
I want to know if I can have some plain popcorn as a snack?

And MY dietician says NO. She says to stay away from ALL white carbs -
white rice, white potatoes, white bread, white pasta, and popcorn. She
says they are all "empty" calories which contain no protein. And
since protein is what we're supposed to be eating, she would rather we have
some fat free cottage cheese with a little dry Hidden Valley Ranch dressing
stirred in for flavor, or some sugar-free jam (I use Polaner Sugar-Free
Strawberry Preserves with Fiber and hit two birds with one stone). She
also recommends Weight Watchers string cheese, or beef jerkey (or turkey
jerkey) as snacks. And she says if we absolutely MUST have rice or bread
or pasta, that we need to make sure we get whole grain stuff, nothing made
with white flour. And if we have to have a potato, to have a small serving
of yam or sweet potato.

Don't know if you have ever heard of Connie Stapleton, Ph.D but she is a
speaker for OH conferences. Her thing is "If it's white, don't bite
except cottage cheese and eggs" and "if it's sweet don't
eat." You can find her on youtube - she has her talk that she gave at
the conference. Very informative. I personally don't eat popcorn because
it messes up my stomach.

I had my surgery in Aug. 2008. I have popcorn almost every single day,
with no problems at all. I had RNY so I did not eat popcorn until I was
about 8 months out from surgery. I also only have this for a snack, after
all my proteins are in of course. The best thing is to ask your
nutritionist. I think it's a good source of fiber. Good luck in your
journey.

My dietician has never mentioned popcorn. I have it occasionally and have
had no problem. I do try to stay away from bad carbs, but popcorn has
fiber so I don't put it in the category of white rice, white flour, sugar,
etc.
IMO.....if it's something you enjoy, have it in moderation.

I guess there are different schools of thought on this. If you are getting
in all your protein and making healthy choices I see nothing wrong with
treating yourself to a favorite snack. With me, if I deprive myself of
something I really want, it backfires on me. Everything in moderation.
Never eating anything white again? Is this realistic for everyone? Some
people can do it. Some may need to learn how to do it in moderation. I
think it depends on the person, their past eating habits and their emotions
associated with eating.

I'm 20 months out from RNY and have popcorn on occasion with no problems.
It's a good source of fiber for me, which I do not get enough of on a
regular basis.
