I am finding the difference between real hunger and brain hunger. Don't let
the brain hunger get in the way. I am only 2 weeks post-op lap-band and I
am being very careful not to eat the wrong things that got me in to the
state I am and was in. Sounds dumb, but I've been watching the Biggest
Loser, and for some reason, their struggle helps me. Good luck!

I am a little over a year and it getts harder all the time to eat well. I
keep safe snacks on hand like jerky and nuts. Be very careful about taking
diet aids since we absorb things differantly then others. Also many are
designed to swell in the stomach and this would be a big problem. The
problem is cravings versa hunger. I know I want to keep th eweight off and
will make the riht choices.

Make sure you are getting your protein. I have found when I'm craving bad
stuff often I am short on my protein. After I get my protein back up for a
couple days the cravings go away

I will be three years out (RNY) on Feb 15, 2010. About 2.5 years out... I
got my appetite back and was able to start eating... well just about
anything... within reason. I had been VERYY sugar sensitive and slightly
sensitive to fat. I found myself one day buying all CRAP at the grocery
store. I was coming up on my period - had gone off birth control for 6
months to give my body a break. I realized what I was doing and adjusted my
way of thinking about food again. I went back to getting the 100 calorie
snacks and limiting myself to them. I added jerky and protein shots back
into my regime. I changed up my exercise. Instead of doing the same ol'
same ol' just to get it done, I made it interesting again. Basically, found
the original mind set from the beginning of this journey and realized that
I HAVE to be picky about what I put into my body - 4ever. So... increasing
my protein has helped with the hunger - it was true hunger, not head hunger
and I have been doing well again. My positive thoughts go out to you my
friend.

I am 5 years post-op and at my goal weight. We all go through times when
we crave foods. It might be hormonal, emotional, stress related, boredom,
or just a desire to taste something wonderful that is not necessarily
nutritious. For me what has worked the best is to buy or make something
I've been craving, using the best ingredients. Only buy (or make) enough
dessert for one meal (including enough for your family). Prepare (or
order) a delicious and nutritious meal (with plenty of good tasting
protein). Leave only enough room for 1-2 bites of the dessert. When
eating out (and even at home) we usually pass around one dessert to share.
Usually people tend to eat too much and rarely need a whole dessert after a
good meal. If you've cooked at home, and there is dessert left, you can
get creative if you know you won't be able to resist the left-overs. If
you have kids, give the left-overs to them to take to their room and ask
them to keep you from having any more. If you had company over, ask them
to take the left-overs home with them. You could also send the left-overs
with your spouse to work the next day. I've even brought the left-overs to
a friend's house the next day. She knows how hard I'm trying to maintain
my weight loss, and supports my efforts. She is very glad to take the
dessert off my hands. Anyway, I'm sure you can come up with more ideas.
The main thing is to not deprive yourself. Just eat healthy, then take
only a couple of bites of what you are craving. The beauty of our WLS is
that it keeps us from always feeling hungry, and we can actually be full
and satisfied. Also, do not keep "off limits" snack around.
They are just too tempting. The more special the presentation, the more
you will be satisfied. Make this a rare treat. I try to use this strategy
once a month or less. It is too easy for me to fall back into a bad habit.
This has worked for me, I hope it works for you too. Best wishes, and God
Bless.
