Question:
Did anybody have post RNY "anorexia" soon after the surgery?
I had my surgery on 7/13/09 (2.5 weeks ago) and went from having severe "head hunger" to being completely uninterested in food. I am taking my vitamins and protein supplements, and am drinking all my water/fluids each day, but I have NO interest in actual food. Did anybody else experience this? And is it detrimental to my weight loss? I know I SHOULD eat, but I just don't feel like it. Help!! — Dillon8644 (posted on July 30, 2009)

It happened to me as well. You just have to eat something. Even if it is
just a sugar free jello or something.

Not eating at all would not be detrimental to your weight loss but it will
be detrimental to your health. You don't need a lot of total calories as
you have calories stored in fat but you can't make protein from your fat.
You have to get the amount of protein that your nutritionist wants you to
have. The hunger will eventually come back. I am 4 1/2 months out and had
to remind myself to eat the first 2 months. Now I'm getting hungary when
it's time to eat, though I'm still satisfied with small amounts. I have
found that exercise is the key to steady weight loss. Hang in there!! Kevin

I have had my bouts with this on and off. It can reek havok on your entire
system especially your heart that has already been thru alot being
overweight. If you can't eat try protein shakes or drinks to get the
nutrition in. You might consider seeing a psycologist to get you thru in
case this is a mental issue. But do try to get in you 50 grams of protein.
You went thru this surgery to get healthy. You must take care of your new
body that you have been given. God bless and good luck to you!

It has been my experience that because we don't have hunger, our interest
in food goes away. I was in want of tastes when I was first out. I
sometimes chewed whatever i craved then spit it out. But fear of this
becoming habit made me stop. I was told by the nutriitionist that feeling
no hunger and lack of interest was normal and that we had to force
ourselves to eat. And Protein first! the first 4 bites should be protein
and then the last two bites could be something else. Take this time of no
food interest to really evaluate what you want from this journey. If you
are anxious to get back to the foods you miss, (and got you heavy) then
really think about what you hope to gain from the surgery. I took my time
to make healthy habits. I am 13 motnhs out and eat no white flour, I eat
protein first, I eat no junkfoods and I feel good. I met goal in 10 months
and am currently below goal, but maintaining now. I am energenic and feel
so good. No more aches and pains, no more meds. I hope you have as good a
journey and learn to think of foods as a source of nutrition and not a
pleasure anymore. I do enjoy maany foods I eat, but I am not in it for
pleasure anymore. I am in it to keep my body healthy and lean. I hope this
has been helpful for you and others. Hugs,Kim

Dont worry. You will be fine. You will learn to eat on scheduel the foods
you need. It getts easier with time and then you struggle with wanting more
than you should. You are normal for 2.5 weeks out

I am 4 weeks out. I hope your doctor office or dietician or nurse told you
that when we have RNY, since most of the original stomach is cut away from
the remainder, the nerve response to the brain with hunger and the hormones
are in that original part of the stomach. I could go days without eating.
IM also having a hard time with having to THINK about food and drink all
the time. But I know when I feel weak and I eat or drink a protein shake, I
feel better.
DOnt give up. Every day start off with the motivation that you are going to
get in your protein and fluids, and the rest as you can. It will get
easier. That I can promise! I count on that every single day. Cin

I am a year and a half out and I could care less about food. I literally
have to make my self eat. Just eat your protein first and I know at least
to me that it sounds disgusting. But thats what I try to do. Good luck
and hopefully it will get better.
