Question:
I am on a 2 week liquid diet before surgery. I ate so much tonight. Help!

I really stuffed up tonight. I pigged out. I ate so much. I couldn't stop. I am on day 8 of the two week liquid diet before surgery. Will it hurt me? Will it effect everything?    — carolyn71 (posted on September 3, 2008)

This may be a sign that you are not truely mentally ready for this operation. My doctor would not have done the operation if I would have eaten during liquid stage so you need to talk to the doctor and see what they say. The liquid stage is to shirk your liver to make the operation as safe as it can be. Do not go into the operation without telling the doctor that you have eaten like this it could cause problems for you and the doctor! Best of Luck.

it isn't about hurting your chances for surgery, its a matter of following orders. this 2 weeks of liquids will show both you and the surgeon if you are ready to buckle down and follow his/her orders. This is just the beginning of new rules for life regarding how you eat, what, how much and when. As a retired surgeon myself, I would be questioning your dedication to the future changes which you will have to make and stick with. Call his office and let them know what happened and let them decide - good luck Cindi 3.24.04 -230# and maintaining

Hi Carolyn, Go right back to your liquid diet! Stay on it and you can let the Dr's office you slipped up ONE time and are now right back on track! I have seen some patients before going into surg sit and eat a bag of candy. [I was waiting for someone else at the time] I am in NO way saying its ok to do this! It just shows that extra care you need to use. I am thinking your Dr. gave you the wonderful pills and nasty drink to take the day before surgery. WEll, that is no picnic and the stuff you enjoyed last night will be a lesson in following the Dr's directions to a tee. In other words...be good and DRINK DRINK DRINK flush your system. You dont say what kind of WLS you are having. I had the Gastric bypass 7/1/08. Know that EVERY Dr has thier own plans for before surg. Do your very best and all will work out for you. I will keep you in my prayers !

Sweetie, you are just human...but that little mistake is just a sample of how hard it is to maintain discipline after surgery. You cannot do that after surgery. If you do, you WILL hurt yourself. I am the kind of person that when I make a mistake, I don't beat myself up. I do get up, shake off the dust and just keep trying, knowing that I am flawed and will always be. I maybe thin, but I still have an eating disorder...Fact, Jack! Now that you had your little feast fest...Dust yourself off and work it out! Take an extra 20 minutes of exercise this week and be accountable for your mistake. It's so much more rewarding when you take action to correct things rather than stand in a corner crying about it and beating your head against a wall. I had my little food fest before surgery too! "My last supper" as it is referred to. 3500 calories make a lb...Hopefully you didn't eat THAT much! haha....If you did, you best get busy chugging down those drinks and getting the sweat going....You can do this! You are so close...Get your new healthier foods ready...Get excited about eating healthy...It's soooo much fun to know that good wholesome food can be great. After surgery, you won't be able to pig out...but over time, if you don't stay disciplined, you can and will get off track and begin to gain weight...Before surgery, I couldn't stop myself most times either...I mean, really! That's why so many of us were MO to begin with...and to scold you for what I've done myself is just not fair...But I will warn you...WLS is not the easy way out and is HARD work...You'll be on your journey in no time...Go drink your protein drink and take a long walk! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

nobody knows if shes ready for this or not so thats not fair to tell her that. The fact of the matter is this, on a liquid diet you are going to be hungry because you dont have the "tool" yet to help you control portions. Just because you ate on day on your liquid diet doesnt mean you are going to sit down with a pack of ho ho's after surgery and pig out. I had to do a liquid diet for 1 day only and I was starving, I couldnt imagine doing it for two weeks pre-op. I would tell your doc hey I slipped up on this day, just to make sure you are safe, I know its scary to tell him because you dont want to get the surgery date cancelled but its better to be safe then sorry. Hang in there you are only human. Its kind of hard to build a house with out a hammer just like its hard to lose weight without the tools to help!

Quiet your food cravings with sugar free popsicles. Eat as many as it takes. In one twentyfour hour period I ate more than 30. It go me through the liquid diet. You can do it.

Hey there! I am sure you feel like a failure right now but listen, get back on the horse and you will be fine. As far as some of the other comments and how you are mentally ready for this surgery, that is up to you and you alone. We all have our opinions. My advice is forgive yourself and get back to doing the right thing. We are human and we make errors. Afterall we are desperate and that is why we are choosing to have surgery. YES!! You must buckle down and NOT do this again but forgive yourself and remember how importand this diet is to your future. I think the nerves and anxiety of having surgery can also play a big part in our attitude towards food. Just remember your goals and that you are worth it. Food is an addiction and anyone who knows that feeling also knows how you feel today and can sympathize with you. Dont give up and start over. Your new life is more important than any food. That feeling food gives you is just a temporary feeling. The way you feel after surgery is a lifelong friendship. God bless you.

None of us were "ready mentally". That's why we needed weight loss surgery - we became overweight because we were eating too much or the wrong foods and were not able to control ourselves..... If we had perfect self-control over our eating, we wouldn't need this surgery. I made the same mistake before surgery, and I am sure thousands of other people have too. I have now lost 84 pounds after surgery, and find the surgery helps me much more self-control I was lacking before surgery. Just chalk it up and get back on track. Keep on trying.... You'll get some weight off and shrink your liver before surgery, which is good, so just keep on trying to stick to your diet. You fell off the horse, hun, now, dust yourself off, and climb right back on!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the last 4 responses prior to mine. Two weeks on a liquid diet prior to surgery with no tool (small pouch) to help ... that's pure torture! After 8 days, falling off the wagon is probably "normal". Tell your doctor about it, but get committed to start today back on track. You are not able to eat like this AFTER your surgery so consider it your last meal. I didn't have to diet or be on a special diet prior to surgery but lost 11 pounds just before because I knew my liver enzymes were off and suspected a fatty liver and wanted to shrink my liver to make it easier on the surgeon to work with his tools. Being on the liquid diet for 2 full weeks after surgery was hard for me, but I did it. It was FINE until about day 10 and I tell people that my dog's hind leg was lookin' pretty good! ("Tastes like chicken???") HA! Good luck with your diet, surgery, and lifestyle change!
