Pretty much the average gain, I did it, most others do it too. The IVs and
liquids given to you in the hospital causes it and it will come off a
kitin'. Just stick with the basics and you will soon be watching fat fall
off in the floor. Lyn

It's the fluids they will come of in the next week or so, then look
out..... the weight will be coming off rapidly!

The trauma of surviving a major surgery, hormones being wacky being a
female and your body holding on to everything with scarce calories going
into starvation mode are the reasons this is happening to you. It is
pretty common. You're only 2 days out and weighing yourself already... I
suggest laying off the scales and cutting yourself a lot of slack.
Follow your instructions and you will do great. Hang in there.

They either added a lot of IV's which we all seem to have had, or left a
lead weight inside of you :>) I would assume it was liquids, and when
you weight in a week that liquid would have passed. Make sure that you are
sipping 100 oz of water each day, as you can get dehydrated if you don't.
The Fat will flow off with the liquid you pass, but you got to keep
replacing it to keep the process going. Best of success to you.

It is very normal for your body to hang onto fluids after a trauma such as
Surgery. During surgery your were given a lot of fluids IV, as well as
during a laproscopic surgery, large amount of fluids are used to keep the
surgical field clear inorder to visualize the lap procedure...depending on
the time it took for your surgery,,your blood pressure. a lot of factors
determine the amount of fluid used for you during surgery. It will come off
within a few weeks. Very Normal dont worry.. But do report any problems to
your surgeon ! Congratulations on your surgery and good luck blinksFL
I am preop waiting for approval...but as a nurse I know this is the case
with any surgery, especially of the abdomin.

Sarah, I had VSG, but was horrified to come home and weigh 5 lb more than I
did than when I went in for surgery. I looked like a blowfish when I came
home. It is normal. It is all the fluids, medications, and gas pumped into
you. It will very quickly go away and you will be on the road to loosing.

I gained 10 lbs when I hoped the scales the day after surgery. I not only
lost that 10 lbs but another 18 lbs two weeks post surgery. Today starts
week 3 and its an adventure just wondering what the scales will say this
week. I'm trying really hard to stay off them and only weigh weekly but
don't beat yourself up if you don't...its hard!!!

It's supposed to take 3500 excess calories to gain a pound, which would
mean in order for this to be an increase in body tissue (fat/muscle/bone as
opposed to fluid) you would have had to have eaten an extra 35,000
calories---that's about 65 Big Macs. I know it must be disappointing and
scary to find that you've gained 10lbs, but you'd have to have consumed a
massive amount of food for this to be anything other than fluids. Make
sure you're following whatever nutritional guidelines your
surgeon/nutritionist gave you... exercise... and most importantly stay off
the scale! :) The weight will come off, it just takes a little time.

I had my RNY on 7/7/08 and I was down 30#. When they weighed me before I
went home I had gained 21#. I know exactly how you feel. If my Dr prepare
me in advance I would have come unglued!
