Question:
Multivitamin & Heartburn
Has anyone experienced a severe heartburn sensation when taking their multivitamin? I have never experienced this before now but today when I took it my stomach has been burning from the moment I took it. I am 15 weeks post-op. — msimon (posted on March 13, 2008)

I am 6 weeks out and do experience the heartburn once in a while after
taking the multivitam. It gets better if I drink something before and
afterwards. Maybe if you drink a little bit of milk before you take it, it
might help.

Your best bet is to stick with water versus milk at this point. And
remember if you have been cleared for any antacid usage (IE: Tums) to not
take any other meds or supplements within an hour before or after taking
the antacid as it will effect the absorption of your meds and supplements.

Make sure that you are not taking something that has an anti-inflamatory in
it or a full does asprin. I was put back on a full does of asprin and it
burnt a hole in my pouch before I realised what was making me have a pain
each morning.

I have a VSG and take a chewable vitamin. If you are taking regular
vitamins you might try crushing it and putting it in a little SF pudding.
Ruins the tast of the pudding, but it helps in getting it down. Ha, ha!

Thanks for the idea of crushing my vitamins and putting them in SF pudding.
I remember my grandma used to do that when I was a kid. I have been
having a really hard time getting my pills down and I think this will
really help get all my vitamins down which I haven't been able to do.

If you're a RNY patient who is less than one year out, you probably should
be enjoying a fine chewable vitamin (or a liquid one if you can stand the
taste). Swallowing a vitamin pill is going to do a number on your system
and there is not really enough stomach acid to dissolve it so that it can
be readily absorbed.

Hi Marcia. If you think your multivitamin is the culprit, be sure and take
it with a little food, or change your vitamin. I never had that problem,
but try some adjustments and see if that helps. I do know that some people
get heartburn, even after wls. Take care. Patricia P.
