Question:
PMS questions

Okay ladies, this question is for all of you out there. I am close to a year out from Lap-Band. I have lost almost 100 pounds. Needless to say, I have noticed as of the last few months that my PMS symptoms seem to be so much worse than they were before. I just seem to get into this depressive funk for the three or four days before my period. I'm fine once I get my period, but those few days before are killer. Has anyone else experienced this with their weight loss? I know that when I was heavier I was a little bit moody/depressed, but nothing like now. Any answers or insight would be appreciated. Thanks!    — fluphystuph (posted on January 17, 2008)

Wow, that is amazing! I had gastirc bypassn 6 months ago and have lost 75 pounds. I also had minor depressions prior to surgery especially around my periods but I have had some extreme lows in the last couple of months. I feel awesome and thin and beautiful so why the extreme lows? I cant figure it out I blamed the extreme weight loss and maybe it through my system out of balance. I dont know other then I did not like feeling so sad and depressed. I have no reason what so ever to feel sad, the weight loss is great, I am happly married, everything is good but I could not control the sadness.I talked to my internist and he put me on Wellbutrin XL. It has made all the difference. Maybe your doctor will have a suggestion for you. I still blame the weight loss, not that I would trade it for being heavy again but I understand your sadness. Just wanted to share.

Think of it this way. You were 100 lbs. heavier and that extra fat is where female hormones are stored. When you shed the weight your body has less of you to deal with them so you feel their effect more strongly. I hope that helps. DebbieNB

Check with your OB/GYN but I'm betting with the weight loss there are major changes in your luteinizing (sp)hormone. That's what I was told back in the day when I lost 70 pounds after being put on metformin for PCOS, (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome). I was bonkers...literally. I was happy to have the weight off, but crazy depressed the days before my cycle. I had a love/hate relationship with my husband and the poor guy was SO confused. It finally settled down after a few months, but it was the first time I had ever experienced PMS. Sometimes they'll talk to you about going on some low dose birth control to keep things regulated with the estrogen and such. I know they use YAZ birth control to help with PMDD and some PMS issues. I think the weight loss really wreaks havoc on us girls and our hormones. It's the catch 22 of it all I suppose. I'd definitely talk to your surgeon's office or consult with your OB/GYN about it. They're very aware of this happening and I know my office discussed it with me in length. Good luck and keep your chin up! Hugs! Cheryl

I feel what you go through. I was put on Prozac years ago and it has been such a help. Helps me stay level all month. I now take Paxil, because after years of Prozac I had to change medicine. Talk to YOur Doctor. Gabluecrab

I am just happy to have a period. Before surgery I had went 2 years with out and I was NEVER regular, the shortest I would go would be 4 or 5 months then finally it had been 2 years--and I was a moody and hormonal witch! But I also have some depression or anxiety along with my period now also. I was also infertile, now I have a 15 month old and a 3 month old:)
