Question:
Does Anybody Know Why...

Okay, today I received my annual enrollment packet from Micron and I am so upset that the Micron team members who live in Minnesota are having weight loss surgery added to their policies!!! Why don't they do that here? Can I go to the company with this and will it do me any good? I am so disappointed I can hardly stand it. Thanks, Kelli    — kelli4wls (posted on October 21, 2006)

Why don't they do that here? that would be a question for your company --how are we supposed to know your company rules and regulations?? Can I go to the company with this and will it do me any good? you can do anything you want --its a free world ..as for will it do you any good? once again --thats up to your company policies and rules and regulations..how are we supposed to know that answer??

That was pretty rude, Dale. I have been trying to save to pay for this surgery myself for two years. That is not easy on what Micton pays us. I just thought someone might know about how and why a company can do this. I thought the purpose of this site was to support and encourage others in the same or similar circumstances. Thanks for hurting my feellings. Kelli

I does seem a bit odd that one site get better pay then another, but not uncommon, first student transportation pays diifrent hourly rates to thier drivers garage by garage, and they share buses and bosses. this is why you join a UNION, SO YOU ARE TREATED FAIRLY AND WITH RESPECT. Its not rude to answer a question with a answer that you dont like, its just how it is, the world is not rose colored. l

I am with Kelly, and if you don't have anything to add in the way of an answer to her question then don't waste your time typing. And no it is not rude to say how it really is but you can say it without being a jerk too.

You can speak with your insurance company and see what the criteria is. Then see if you can do anything about it. Now that you have done that contact the Insurance commissioner of your state and state you case. Most insurance companies will work on it due to the fact that is a issue is pending with the insurance commissioner's office the insurance company cannot change its policies until it is resolved. Hope this helps...

Kelli, by all means you can go to your company with your questions. If you have an HR department or a benefits coordinator that is where you could start with your questions. The one thing that I can think of is that maybe in Minnesota it is required by state statute to have the surgery covered. Chris

Is your company a publically held company? Is it self-insured and self-funded? I'm thinking that if there is someone else that had the surgery in another state you could think about throwing the American Disabilities Act at them and say a few words about discrimination. That may catch their attention.

Hi Kelli, First let me start by saying... "Dale... lose the attitude, this is supposed to be a site where we SUPPORT each other. We all have gotten enough of that moronic attitude and shouldn't have to deal with it here" Now, Kelli, I have read the other answers, and I think that they all have some good points, excluding Dale's. I think that you could first go to the HR benefits person. If their answer is 'yep, that's what it says' then push a little further. Get the name and address of someone that you can write to. I bet you that the reason that the other division of your corp is adding it on is that there was a squeaky wheel. Either that, or someone at the top has a relative, friend, etc. who benefited from the surgery and they were inspired and impressed enough to make sure that it was available to their employees. It may take a while, but what do you have to lose...... I say GO FOR IT GIRL...... be that squeaky wheel ..... you could pave the way for alot of others. And, see if there are other people at your site who would like the surgery. There is strength in numbers. You could encourage them to write too. After all, if successful, you will have already built up your own support network. ;-) Be well and good luck............ Kari K

Hey, sweetie...I'm not sure why you can't do that. It's very disappointing. I didn't have something like that happen to me, but my insurance had a written exclusion which has made it so I will have to pay out of pocket. I live in Iowa and will be having surgery in Ohio, because I found a surgeon who is willing to work with me on a very straightforward payment plan - interest free! His name is Dr. Brian Lane and he works for Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green, OH. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me (my user name is misssugarjones). Hang in there and don't let snippy comments from crabby people get you down! *hugs* Sarah

Kelli, I'd approach human resources of your company about the issue. This is a good question to ask. If you all work for the same company but are in different locations, this is a good question to ask why are certain benefits provided to one group of Micron employees and not employees for the entire company. Ask the question in writing so that you will have a reply in writing. Don't ask your supervisor, they would have no clue. Go straight to HR at your local office and if they don't have an anwer go to HR on the corporate level. If they don't give you a satisfactory answer, contact your elected official from your district and ask if there are any Minnesota state insurance laws regarding regulations of providing insurance to its employees.
