Question:
I neeed some good....
I will be having surgery soon and would like to hear some of your ideas on protein drinks and wonderful things you have come up with that taste good. Anything for a liquid diet would be helpful as well. Thanks! — missyheffelfinger (posted on September 29, 2006)

I take a cup of Light Silk, a scoop of protein powder (whey protein, it
dissolves better, no grit!) 1/2 a banana and 2 ice cubes and blend. Tastes
great to me. I also freeze my own fruit and add that sometimes. I take
blueberries and freeze them on a cookie sheet for 30 minutes and then put
into tupperware and deep freeze. Then when I want to add a handful, they
are loose in the container. I do the same thing with fresh strawberries. I
cut the stem off, freeze on a cookie sheet for 30 minutes and dump into a
tupperware container. If you have a Trader Joe's near you (incredible
little grocery store chain!) they sell fresh pineapple and fresh mango,
already frozen in pieces, no sugar added. This way I can change-up the
shake everytime I make one. If you are having a RNY, watch the fruit the
first few weeks, to much sugar, even natural sugar, could cause dumping. If
you are having lap-band, then no problem with the fruit.

Hands down the easiest protein I got down was the Protidiet drinks. Get
the concentrates, not the powders. They are fantastic - based on gelatin
protein, so they go down very easily like Crystal Light with no funky
aftertaste. The cheapest place I've found them online is here:
http://gallery.bcentral.com/ProductDetails.aspx?GID=5150679&PID=4879436.
That is pretty cheap because most places charge $10.00 a box for them.
This stuff, in my opinion, is the very best for bariatric patients though
because it doesn't make you nauseous. Some people just can't hack the whey
proteins...at least early on. That being said, as far as whey proteins go,
the best tasting mix I found is Unjury. You can also use the low carb (now
called low calorie) milks which are essentially just a protein drink, but
they taste more like the real thing. The Calorie Countdown chocolate milk
is my favorite. It tastes better than the regular chocolate milk, in my
opinion. Has a rich thick flavor/texture. I use it for mochas as well.
It has 12 grams of protein per 8 ounce serving. Ounce for ounce that is
more than some protein shakes out there. The regular Calorie Countdown
milk is great for having with low-carb cereal too, and I make my oatmeal
with it to boost the protein level. You can also use it to make sugar free
pudding. I used the chocolate and added a scoop of chocolate Unjury powder
to sugar free chocolate pudding and it was a fabulous "treat" to
get your protein in. Hope that helps!

I drink Revival Soy three times a day...low carb made w/ splenda and it
tastes great! They will send you free samples...their website is
www.revivalsoy.com. I have tried every protein drink on the market and by
far this is the best...also Muscle Milk is good which you can get at
Vitamin Express. Good luck on your surgery...it will be the best thing you
do in your life!
