Question:
Is a c-section required for pregnancy after WLS?

I am 11 months out of WLS. I am also 18 weeks pregnant. Others I have spoke to who have had WLS and pregnancy have all had c-sections. My doctor thinks it is not neccesary just becase of WLS. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks for your help!!    — kchurchwell (posted on August 14, 2006)

I honestly don't see how having WLS would make it neccisary for you to have a c-sction, One thing has nothing to do with the other. I am currently 5 1/2 months preggy and have no reason to even expect to have a section. I don't htink you have anythign to worry about.

Hi Karen, as NavyNukewife stated one thing does not have anything to do with the other and WLS alone will not force you to have a c-section. I am 19 months post-op and just gave birth to a wonderful and healthy baby girl, I had her naturally.

I had a vaginal birth after WLS...there is no reason why the surgery would cause you to have to have a C Section.

C- cection delivieries are rampant in many areas. the rate used to be and should be about 5-10 % but in many areas are 25-30% or even higher. that fact that you are seing so many c-sections among your firends is not due to the wls but the changes in how OB patients are managed in general. Many women are requesting c=section deliveries in the mistaken impression that it is easier or safer, but statistics show that there are many risks related to any major surgery, and outcomes for babies are not always better. In some cases a c- section is life saving, but that is a very small minority od the cases. much of the increase is related to liability issues, convenience, interference with the natural process of the body indelivering a child. for info on having a normal natural birth here is a place to start. http://www.bradleybirth.com/
