Question:
I was sleeping and woke up suddenly gasping for air!

OMG! I was just lying down on the couch earlier sleeping peacefully and I suddenly sat up and could not breathe and I was gasping for air!! It was like something was in my throat blocking my airway. Then after finally catching my breath my throat felt like it was on fire and I still felt something in my throat so I coughed to see if it would come up and it was this bright green nasty stuff and it tasted horrible, like a crushed up pill. It was absolutely terrible! Nothing like this has ever happened and it scared me to death! I though I was dying when I couldn't breathe! I had acid reflux before my gastric bypass but haven't had any problems since surgery. Does anyone have any idea of what this may be? Could it be stomach ulcers? I hadn't eaten any greasy foods, all I had eaten before this incident was 1/2 of a ham sandwich. Should I go see my gastric bypass DR? All suggestions are very appreciated! ~Melissa    — WannaBSlim (posted on July 28, 2006)

Hi and congrads on your journey. I would call your doctor and make an appt. Maybe you are getting sick, or maybe somthing else. But call and he can either make a suggestion or tell you what to doo. Good Luck,

Melissa, it sounds like an episode of reflux, and the green stuff was the bile from your stomach, especially since it was burning. You could call your doc on Monday and let him/her know. In the mean time there are over-the-counter meds such as TUMS if you need to settle your throat and stomach some. Good luck. Shelly

I get sinus infections and that happens to me.It could have come from your head and got caught on the way down.

Melissa - Although it may be nothing really serious, you should call your doctor asap and make sure that it is nothing. Bile backing up doesn't sound right to me, and I definitely think it sounds like bile rather than sinus fluid. Most people will not have acid reflux after surgery, so my concern is that you have a blockage...even if temporary, and you should check it out. Better to be safe than sorry!!!
