Question:
Has anyone 68+ had open RYN?
My family is giving me grief about open RYN at the age of 68. Has anyone out there any success stories or things I should be aware of having this surgery at this age? Thanks, Kathleen — KSchwedler (posted on June 4, 2006)

congrats on you wanting to improve your life. Age has no bearing on the
surgery from what i know. they should be happy for you, as you are going
to extend your life in a very short time. Also tell them that you are
doing this for you and NOT for them. Take them to a support meeting and
listen to all the success the rest of the people are having.
Best of Luck

There are plenty of success stories to share with your family and loved
ones. (Although, ultimately you are responsible for your own health... but
I understand and sympathize with their concerns for you.) You should check
out the Over 50 board. There are lots of 'older folks' there who can share
their stories with you. http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/over_50/

I will be 67 this month. I had open RNY on March 29 with now problems even
though I have major coronary artery disease. I healed quickly and well. I
used to take 4 insulin shots per day--now none. I used to take two
cholesteral medications and now I take none. I used to take 2 diuretics
twice a day and I now take none and my blood pressure medication dosage has
been cut in half. Absolutely go for it It isn't easy but its worth it.

My mother and I both had open Rouxen-Y surgery on 9/26/05. I have not had
many problems, my mother (age 63) has had drastic problems, including
loosing the use of her legs and hands. She went to bed on 12/19 & when
she woke up 12/20, she couldnt walk, but didnt know this till she stood up.
She has not been able to walk on her own since then. She is going through
physical therapy and that is helping some, so that she can now walk with a
walker and leg braces a few steps, but for the most part is in her recliner
24 x 7. She uses a wheelchair to go any distance.
All I can say is pray for God to Bless you with his plan for your life...
not for God to Bless your plan...

kathleen,
I am 64, had my surgery April, 06. Have had no problems. I was reading in
the over 50 forum that a dr had done someone who was 78 yrs old, who did
well. And many over 60. Good luck.

Hi Kathleen, I am having RNY surgery very shortly. I have had all my
testing and am waiting now for a surgery appt. I have an appt. with my Dr.
and if they find nothing wrong with my stress and echo test, (for my heart)
then I will get a surgery date probably near the end of June. I have been
working on this since Feb. I am 64 yrs. old and will be 65 in October. Do
not let anyone discourage you. it's your life. It is a little scarey at
our age but what are our chances weighing in at 300 lbs or more? I was 292
at one time. I balance out at around 278, but have lost 11 lbs just
getting ready for surgery, so I am now 267. I am looking forward to my new
life. A friend of mine just had the surgery and she is 64. she did very
well, and is a member here on OBH.com. Write me if you have any questions

I had my open RYN on 4-26-04, that's 25 months ago. I just turned 65. I
have lost 180 lbs and want to lose another 20 pounds. It was the greatest
thing I have ever done for myself. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I
won't say it was easy but then major surgery is not suppose to be easy.
Just know the risks before making your decision, follow your own heart and
you will do just fine. My family was uncertain about what I was doing but
now they are my greatest supporters. Good luck. Let us know what you
decide to do. We will support you now. Your family will see the light
after you have shed the weight.
