Question:
I am a diabetic and almost 6 months ago my doctor put me on a "diabetic" diet.
I have read alot where insurances seem to want people to be on a supervised diet for 6 months to a year before the approve. Would my diet count? — hartnell (posted on February 9, 2006)

My insurance requires a 6 month diet which requires monthly visits to a
healthcare professional. I am in my 5th month of the 6 month diet. I
chose Weight Watchers for my diet program and have monthly visits for weigh
in and to talk about my diet and exercise. they are very sticky on this
one!

Tracy, some insurance companies are very picky about this issue. What you
are going to need to do is contact your insurance and have it explained to
you exactly what their requirements are for the supervised diet. Some
insurance companies will say that it strictly needs to be doctor visits
while others will say that going to Weight Watchers AND doctor visits for
discussion of your diet and monthly weigh in are ok also. Some won't even
look at the WW attendance at all, they do not feel that it is supervised by
a doctor. Be very careful in your going to a doctor monthly, do not miss a
month. Make sure that the doctor charts EVERYTHING about the visit in
regards to your attempting to loose weight in addition to your weigh in.
Good luck with your insurance.

If you saw your doctor regularly an dkept your diabetes under control with
the diabetic diet it should definitely count towards your diet requirement.
Good luck!

Tracy if you haven't seen your doctor for a weigh in once a month then it
probably won't be accepted. It's not just the diet it's to see that you
are able to follow the diet by being weighed in once a month. If not start
doing so immediately. Good luck on your progress.

It counts if you go to the doctor and have it documented every month for
six months or so.
