Question:
If an appeal is imminent, why jump through hoops??

I'm just starting my journey toward RNY - know the surgeon I want etc. and have been referred to a Nutrition MD. I have a pretty good weight history documented - taken meds, wt watchers etc. The issue is not losing weight, it's keeping it off for any length of time... What would you do - be patient or appeal sooner rather than later???    — rrutherford (posted on January 10, 2006)

Ron - always wait until you get a comprehensive definitive answer you are denied and why before you start your appeal - why borrow trouble. If you present documentation before you are denied, you may be leaving something out they require in the appeal- dont jump the gun in anticipation- just wait, you just might be surprised, and wont need an appeal. What you been told that lead you to believe an appeal is necessary? Best of luck Ron, I hope you are approved very quickly- and the road to WLS runs smoothly for you. Cindi -216#

Ron, I know that this is a stressful time for your right now but you have to be positive. Unless your policy has an exclusion for WLS then don't invite the thoughts of an imminent denial. Some of us went through the process so fast until our heads spun and then of course there are those that had to "jump through hoops". If your policy holder happens to be one of the companies that put you through the summer olympics, if you stick it out it is still worth it in the end. I wish you the best and stay positive. Tiffany

If "jumping through hoops" means you learn everything you can about nutrition before AND after WLS and demonstrate the ability to follow a diet plan, then by all means I suggest you follow their guidelines and do it. Obesity doesn't happen overnight and as much as we would all like to lose it that way, it isn't very realistic. You are a better candidate for sucessfull wls being an educated patient. I started the process in March, was approved in September and had my sugery December 1st. The time flew while I was following the insurance company's guidelines and I gained so much knowledge through research and support groups. Nothing during or after the surgery surprised me and I was prepared. That is the key to being sucessful.....education and awareness and the ability to follow directions from your Dr.
