Question:
Baby aspirin?

I just wondered. As a pre-op (17 days, yay) I am very scared of blood clots. I was wondering if anyone asked their dr. if they could take 1 baby asprin a day POST-OP to prevent them?    — Kristin M. (posted on May 12, 2003)

I was told not to take any aspirin products ever post-op. Pre-op I took 1 baby aspirin a day, since my mother had a heart attach at 47. Now, post-op, I was told I couldn't continue that. Good luck!

I would check with the surgeon first. I wouldn't do it pre-op as it can thin your blood(don't think 1 dose would do anything for you anyway). You need to make sure you move around in the hospital. Also, the hospital should put those vascular boots on your legs and they will keep the blood flowing during surgery and early post op. Again, get up and walk around the hospital floor after your surgery. This also helps with the gas! I used to do major laps around the floor and I truly felt good. The nurses would joke about the milage I would clock. I definetly helped. Best wishes and continued success.

I was told to not take any asprin products 1 week prior to surgury. I was given heprin every 8 hours, and they put theese boots on my feet to increase circulation. Each doc is different though. Talk to yours, and see what he/she recommends. Goood luck on your journey, and God bless! 2.5 weeks out, down 22#

I am a male in my mid-fourties. My doctor said one baby aspirin a day is adviseable, even post RNY. However, some surgeons disagree, so please ask yours. I have heard some say that aspirin stops mucous production, leaving the stomach open to acid damage, but if anything RNY's seem to have far more mucous per square inch of pouch than they need. My foaming and mucous continues, regardless of whether I take the baby aspirin.
