Question:
I need help in getting in all the protein I need.

I can't stomach the protein drinks/shakes. What foods are highest in proteins?    — Betty M. (posted on September 13, 2001)

How many types of drinks/shakes have you tried? I ask this because I was like you until I just ordered a bunch of samples and tried 1 a day until I found what I liked (Pro Blend 55 Mocha Cappucino). Anyway, I have also recently discovered Protein Bars. But you have to watch the sugar content. The ones I found are 33 g each and come in about 8 diff flavors. Called Pure Protein. They are sweetened with Splenda and have 4 g of sugar. They are higher in carbs than I usually like (14g) but they are a nice alternative when I am traveling or when I don't feel like making a shake. I personally can't get in all the meat required to get in my 60+ grams that I need daily. (by the way, I've heard that GNC takes back any unused portion of powder and will refund money.) Good luck! It is great that you are at least aware of your needs and are proactive enough to seek help.

Hi, I appreciate your question. It is best to get as much as you can out of your food. Meats and fresh green veggies will give you most of your protein. Supplements are another wonderful way to add to the protein and give you variety in your diet. I have a great line of supplements available with 32 flavors and several varieties at very affordable prices. You can visit my website by accessing my profile here. Thanks and best of luck. If you have specific questions just email me and I will get back to you right away. Michelle Funk, RN

You can get a lot of protein from meats (chicken, turkey, beef) fresh fish, canned tuna, sardines, canned salmon, smoked salmon (nova, lox), dairy products, milk, yogurt, cheeses (string cheese, muenster, cheddar, swiss, etc.), eggs (add cheese to scrambled eggs for more protein), nuts, peanut butter, beans, lentils, chick peas, refried beans and tofu. Carb Solutions makes a protein bar with 21g of protein and 2 carbs. It's not a Milky Way but it's filling and has lots of protein. A small container of Wendy's chili is low fat and contains 15 grams of protein. I add shredded cheddar to up the protein and make 2-3 meals out of one container. Taco Bell refried beans with cheese is low fat and has a good amount of protein. Boca Burgers are very good (put cheese on top for more protein). Morningside Farms has a great variety of vegetarian soy products that aren't bad. There is a book called called "The Protein Counter" by Annette B. Natow that has the protein content for over 15,000 foods.
