Question:
Should I combine my RNY bypass surgery with a hysterectomy?
I have been approved for the RNY and the hysterectomy is also medically indicated. — Stephanie M. (posted on May 3, 2001)

Will your Doc even do that. I mean for open RNY they cut from mid belly up
to breast bone, and for hysterectomy from mid belly to bikini line. Ouch, I
think that would be too much. I had a complete hysterectomy. I am told the
hysterectomy is much worse than the bypass. I hope that is so because the
hyster wasn't too bad for me. Although you are very sore from the incision
and feel pulling inside. I haven't had the RNY yet.

Now having had Rny and hysterectomy (6 years apart), I would agree that the
hysterectomy was harder, and recovery longer, although Rny was lap. To
combine the two might mean a longer time under anethesia. Also, they are
done by different specialties, surgeon-wise. Seems like it would be
difficult and more painful.

I know that my surgeon has on occasion done the bypass along side the gyn
surgeon who performed the hysterectomy. I think that it makes perfect sense
to have only one open surgery. It may be a little more difficult, but
having only one recovery sure gets my vote!! Shelley

I am scheduled to have an open rny, gallbladder removal, hernia repair, and
panniculectomy (tummy tuck) at the same time. The doctor says I will have
one incision from hip to hip and they can perform all the surgeries from
that one site. Debbie
