Question:
I take Levothroid for hypothyroidism,....
and I am wondering if anyone would know if the malabsorption would affect the overall absorbtion of this synthetic thyroid hormone. I have been on it for almost 8 years after having my left thyroid nodule removed because of a tumor. Any help is appreciated. — Diana M. (posted on April 10, 2001)

I had open rny on 12/4, and take Synthroid for hyopthyroidism. I just had a
physical 2 weeks ago, and my TSH numbers were normal. However, I just
recently found out that you shouldn't take your calcium supplement in the
morning with your synthetic thryoid, as it will somehow cause the thyroid
pill to not work. I take calcium citrate with D in the evenings, and
Synthroid in the morning. Just be sure to have your TSH numbers monitored
every 2-3 months after surgery for a year or so.

Do not take your thyroid medication when you take iron because iron
decreases the amount of hormone absorbed. I had a problem with getting my
TSH level for quite awhile, then one day my endocrinologist told me about
the iron connection. I always took my vitamins and pill in the morning,
once I stopped doing that my TSH leveled out.
