Question:
I am 2 1/2 weeks post op and for the last 2 days I have had nausea and diarrhea...
Is this normal? The nausea is not severe, but definately there all day.. does this sound like a food reaction or should I be calling the doctor? I don't want to call and be a whiner if it is normal... Thanks for the help, MaryAnn — MaryAnn J. (posted on September 29, 2000)

You didn't say what all you're eating. But any sugar (milk, juices,
yogurts) can cause the diarrhea for some. You could also be lactose
intolerant, which many of us become after surgery. That would also account
for cramping, bloating and diarrhea. We were on clear liquids only, but I
got The D from clear broth! Nausea can be food intolerance or meds or a
mechanical glitch in the system. It's Friday night as you are posting, so
you didn't say if you'd reported this to your doc during this week.
Naturally, you need to report in with them. But things you can try while
waiting for their returned call are eliminating milk and sugar, timing how
long after you eat or drink the nausea occurs, exactly what you are
vomiting and the time frame, and the time frame between ingesting and the
diarrhea. Those will all be handy tidbits to hand over when you talk to
your medical team. If they determine that you must be "scoped",
don't be afraid and don't delay! It is inconvenient, but certainly not
nasty.

I had lots of nausea early on. My surgeon said that many have
this and sometimes it can go on for a while. So, I lived w/ it.
I am much better in that area now. Watch what you are eating. It
could be causing it. Only introduce one new food at a time to see
if it could be contributing. Watch the diarhea as it can help you
get dehydrated fast. Drink plenty of fluids. Contact your surgeon
Monday if it is still there would be my "advice." Good luck. I
know it
is no fun!

Sounds normal to me. I am 13 months post op and I still have nausea and
diarrhea at least 2 to 3 times a week, if not more. According to my
surgeon it just takes time for the body to adjust.
Good Luck!
