Question:
3 weeks out and have hit a plateau, RNY 10/23/09
18 pounds lost to date but upset that there has been no weight lost in past 10 days. Depressed, worried that I am doing something wrong. — vl402 (posted on November 15, 2009)

I wish I had an answer to this. I had RNY October 20. I lost 30 pounds
pre surgery but have only lost 13 since surgery and have not lost anything
for about 10 days. I take in about 60 to 80gr protein daily and drink
enough. I'm staying around 600 calories/day and have been walking almost
daily about 40 minutes. The two nutritionists in my office said adding
protein won't change anything. It's so demoralizing that others in my
clinic have lost upwards of 30 pounds by this time and have even done so
admitting they don't walk and have eaten foods not "allowed" yet.
I have found the responses from my clinic to not be helpful - they just
shrug and say people lose at different rates. My biggest concern is that
these are the months you are supposed to lose at the most rapid loss and
it's not happening and how it will impact my long term goals to lose 70% of
my excess weigtht?

I was told by my surgeon that the first few weeks after that I would not
eat that much and that I would be able to last on eating nothing for a
while. Dont be discouraged, just try know that it will come off. I have had
several problems with gout (never had it before surgery). I have lost 85lbs
and I had my surgery on 8-14-09. You will lose the weight just give it
time. Good Luck and Best Wishes.

Hi there...I had my suregery 2009-10-27 and I'm dealing with the same
thing. Apparently it's a normal thing and you should not worry about it.
Just keep following your eating plan as your doctor suggests. Your body is
in shock from the surgery and will try to hang on to any calories that it
can right now. Give it some time....you'll see that once the healing is
complete you'll have to hold on to something to enjoy the weight loss ride

Don't worry. I had my surgery Oct 31st and lost 30 lbs. in November then
December came and I didn't lose a lb. I was so upset and didn't know what
to do but come January 1st, I started losing again. Early plateaus can
happen. Although upsetting, try not to worry too much and just keep doing
what you are supposed to. Good luck.

Just remember to drink your water, get your protein in and walk! I know it
is frustrating, but hang in there!

Have you spoken with your surgeon? Everyone is different and maybe you are
loosing inches and no necessarily pounds. Are you exercising?

I had RNY on 10-21-09 and am in the same boat, down 17 pounds at first and
nothing in the last 3 weeks...NOTHING! My surgeon, and 2 friends of mine
who had the same surgery told me it's totally normal, because the body is
in shock from surgery, and also burns off a quick 15-20 pounds, then takes
time for the weight (and fat) to redistribute, then you start losing again.
They gave me a good suggestion which has been working for me. It was to
buy a pair of pants 2 sizes too small, and then put them on at the same
time everyday, and you will see and feel the difference, even though the
scale hasn't moved. I know that I have, in the last 10 days those pants
went from being too small, to actually fitting me (snug but fitting) and I
haven't lost any weight on the scale....but my body shape is changing, and
I'm down 2 sizes. Fluids, Protein, and walking is all we can do, and keep
up a positive attitude!! :) Good luck to us all!

My surgery 8-24-209. I understand what you are going through. I went
through the same thing I lost about 80lbs pre-surgery. 20lbs
post-surgery. The scale won't move. I tried to increase protein and
water. The water worked a little. I only loose about 1-2 a week, maybe.
I work out at least 3-4 times a week, 32 ozs water a day.

Just be encourage - everybody is different; that is why we are not suppose
to get on the scale everyday. You probably are not losing according to the
scale but if you take your measurments I bet you will se an improvement. I
had my 08/21/09 I have lost 50 pounds to date I had a period also but I
feels such difference in my clothes, etc so I know I am doing something
right. Stay focus do not worry.

Losing 18 lbs at only 3 weeks out is great. Would you have lost that much
in 3 weeks before? I know I wouldn't have. I was just sharing with another
poster that my body went through some shock and adjustment right after
surgery and I stalled big time at 3-6 weeks out. I had VSG at the end of
March 09. Then I felt better started working out drinking plenty of fluids
and getting lots of protien and the weight just started dropping off. I
have experienced some platues since then and have struggled to drop 10 lbs
in over a 2 month period then another 10 the next month after that. I have
lost 88 lbs overall and I feel great. I do know that I need to consistently
make an effort to work out and be mindful of my eating if I want to
continue losing and I do. I know the first couple of months are the
toughtes. I just had a friend have the same surgery and she agrees at first
its hard. But be encouraged the best is yet to come. When the lbs really
start coming off and your clothes get too big and you need new ones and fit
into sizes that you didn't think you would so soon. Don't let the stalls
get you down but rejoice that you are on this journey and you will have
success.
