If you had your surgery when you lived at home how did you convince them weight loss surgery was right for you — marybeth weaver (posted on October 12, 2009)

Well.. I covered that "Hey I am young, I want to enjoy my youth"
I know that sounds like a short and sweet answer but that is what I kept
tellin him during the appt. I said this is an expensive procedure if im
gonna do it, why not do it now, get more enjoyment out of it. He was
looking more for the right answers... such as quality of life and things
like that. He actually told me not too long ago I refuse patients who
simply say I dont want to be fat anymore. But he did not take too much
convincing. I am sorry if yours is. :( I am 24 and i had it done jan of 08
I was 410lbs and im 5'9'' so maybe my size was a big factor there... I
really don't know what else might help. I wish you luck. :) ~Candy~

I told them by not doing it when I have the option available to me would be
cheating myself out of my full life span. Sure for me the surgery was
optional because I did not have any comorbities and I am a lightweight but
my worry was for how long would it stay that way. Would I continue to be
"healthy" until I was out on my own and would not have an
insurance company has good as my parents which covers everything. I think
not, I got the chance and I took it. And usually at a younger age risks are
lower and healing time is quicker. I let them see that side. Also, I asked
them do they want the possibility that if my weight continued down that
path that they would be burrying me in an oversized casket instead of me
burrying them...the way it should be. They quickly understood why I felt I
needed to do it. BTW I am 19 so very young compared to the average age.

I am 45 and had the RNY surgery 16 months ago..My daughter, 23 , had it
this past june. I was encouraging her as I know whats it like to be
overweight in this society and having health issues. I was more worried
about her health, as she has asthma and the weight brought on attacks when
she walked etc...I hope you can convince your parents if its really what
you want. Best of luck! hugs,Kim

i live at my dad's (i know, i know... i'm 33, whatever). i have my own
insurance and whatnot so i basically just said, "i am having this
surgery". pops knows i'm not going to change my mind, although he and
my boyfriend sat around and gossiped amongst each other about how they did
not want me to have surgery and about how this was stupid and how i will be
miserable. now that they see the difference i think they are pretty
happy!!!

I'm 23 and I have RNY gastric bypass. I simply told my family that I needed
to have this surgery to feel like a human again and to be able to do stuff
with my son. When I was bigger, it was hard for me to do anything with
him.
Honestly, to tell you the truth, my family was ok with it. We got down to a
few weeks before surgery and set up babysitters, vacations, and such. My
mom was very much so okay with taking a vaca for it because she got more
income with her PTO than with working.
Now since my surgery, my brother is thinking about getting it done and my
family is starting to eat healthier. Not only is this whole situation a
learning experience for me, but also for my whole entire family.
Good luck :)
