Question:
How bad is the hair loss?
I'm barely starting on my journey to WLS and I keep hearing about significant hair loss. I already have thin hair, and I just want to be prepared for what is to come. — TIGGER75 (posted on September 14, 2009)

I have a ton of hair and at about 3 1/2 months it started coming out. IT
doesn't appear on my pillowcases like some have said, but it does come out
in clumps when I wash my hair, put in styling products, or comb my hair. By
the end of the day, I've got a nice fur ball on the back of my shirt. I was
expecting this so it wasn't too much of a shock, but still I can see how it
would be. I am close but don't get quite the required protein in still, but
I'm trying every day. It is honestly different for everyone. I did have a
shorter hair cut done on me at about 3 months, and you can barely tell I'm
losing any hair.
Good luck!

I had RNY done November of 2008. I began losing hair about 5 months after
and continue to lose hair. I have very thin hair anyway so for me its
really bad. Finally, this month I can see the loss is slowing down
some...clearly not as bad as it was. However, I have noticable bald spots
and I have to wear a wig or weave in my hair....Very scary and touchy thing
for me but I can see a difference. I take Biotin everyday and use Nioxin
shampoo and conditioner...Everyone doesn't lose a lot of hair but I
did.....So prepare yourself for the worst and hope for the best. GOOD LUCK

I lost alot of hair 4 months after my surgery. I am 17 mo post RNY..Just
hang in there. There is nothing you can do to stop it...Just keep your
protein up and take Biotin so the hair that does come back is thicker and
healthier. Good luck

it's pretty bad. i know i look ridiculous. i use a lot of headbands and
clips and stuff and shrug it off. it's still better than being 150 lbs
overweight.

I have to agree with the rest. At about 3 months my hair began shedding and
has not slowed yet but my doctor said it should soon slow and begin to grow
back. Like another shared......it sure beats being 150 pounds overweight.
Good luck.

Thank god I was somewhat prepared for this, because when I started to loose
my hair at about 4 or 5 months out it has not stopped yet. I have a full
head of hair Thank God! I have been told that it will stop soon( I hope LOL
)I take biotin and eat plenty of protien. I have lost over 100 pounds so a
little hair loss is ok with me it grows back. Good luck and God bless :0)
