Question:
do you have to or is it good to wear a girdle after gastric bypass surgery?

I don't know the medical answer to this question, just seems loose clothing would be better and not pull on those inner sutures.

You don't have to wear a girdle after surgery, but I find it more comfortable to wear some sort of "shape-wear" under my clothes... my loose skin hangs over my panties so I wear a lycra spaghetti strap tank that I got from the JB Penny outlet... I love it. Also, SPANX are great... I might be imagining it, but the extra support in the mid-section makes me feel fuller...

Some groups do encourage the use of a binder of some sort to support the muscule of the mid section as you lose weight. I don't use one.

I wish I could relay this to everyone. DrCurve.com sales reshaping garments. They help to hold you in and up as you lose the weight. A personal wls friend told me that the garment gave her the desired shape while losing her weight. It is better than any product I've seen. Check it out. www.DrCurve.com

My doc & hospital gave us binders to wear post-surgery. The instructions I was given were to wear it as I saw fit - if I felt it helped, wear it. If not, then leave it. I found that it really helped put some pressure on my abdominal area while I was immediately recovering post surgery when I was having quite a bit of pain, especially when I was losing REALLY rapidly immediately after the surgery. I found it to be really itchy, though, so I wore one of those thin "wifebeater" men's tanks under it. Then, once I got better and was able to sleep in a bed, it really helped me to roll over and start sleeping on my side again.

No, you do not have to wear one but if you carry most or alot of your weight in your stomach it is a good idea because as you lose the weight the excess skin will still pull on your back and this can cause you some back pain. Plus, it make your clothes look neater, on you as you lose your weight and it helps you lose weight by allowing to move more freely while exercising. Because if you have alot of loose skin moving around while you working out how long do you think that you are want to keep working out. I am 5 years out and I wish I had wore one more than I did. My friend wore one all the time and she doesn't have alot of excess skin hang like I do. Now don't get wrong we both have excess skin it just her hang better and looks better than mine and believe it is due to the fact she wore a girdle all the time. Oh yeah wait until you have you have healed up before useing one.
