Question:
Regained almost all my weight.

I weighed over 300 pounds at RNY. Now, 9 years later, I weigh over 270. 30 Pounds more than a few months after my RNY. I have a different insurence now. Before BCBS. Now United Health. I believe I am out of luck. I live in Kansas. Anyone know if I have a chance for my insurence to pay? I also have Medicare.    — Barbara Mark (posted on July 12, 2009)

Hi Barbara, It mostly will depend on your employer and any exclusions they may have opted for in your policy. I have United Health Care and they paid for my surgery with the only requirement being medical necessity. It was very fast and no problem. So, don't get too discouraged. Check it out. I will be praying that you are covered.

Medicare does pay for revisions but as with most insurances you have to meet certain criteria. You will also have to find a provider that does revisions and accepts Medicare and the hospital has to be a center of excellence for Medicare to pay for it there. I have Medicare and am going to be having a revision probably in July. I am just waiting for the final paperwork from primary doctor and the paperwork from pulmonary and cardiac clearance.

To Mary, Revision means having another weight loss surgery either having the one you had fixed if it needs it, or another one in general. For example, the first one I had was vertical banding, I am now going to have the rny which they call revision.

ok first thing first. Look at what you are doing. Are you walking? Are you taking care to avoid carbs. Carbs will hurt your chances of keeping weight off. Nine years out you may need a revision. Insurance is much more cooperative now then it was years ago. Talk to your insurance company and get the ball rolling.

Barbara first you may want to see your bypass doc for some tests to see if your pouch has actually streched. I have gain almost all my weight back after 7 years and I recently found out my pouch is still small - no revision necessary other than behavior on my part!

Hi Barbara, We seemed to have a lot in commom... I had the RNY back in 2001, had BCBS insurance.... I have now gained about 80lbs back and have United Health Insurance. I have decided on having the ROSE procedure by a doctor in the New Orleans area. They did confirm that my insurance will pay @90% benefit w/ a $3000.00 copayment. I have already started the pre-program testings & appointments w/dietician & etc. I am so excited and have decided no way will I gain lbs back if this procedure will be successful. If anyone reading this has any comments on the ROSE Procedure, please post.
