Question:
Is dumping syndrome common for both types of procedures?

What do you mean by "both" procedures? There are several different procedures related to WLS out there so you would need to specify which 2 you're talking about. There is RNY, VSG, DS, Lap Band, VBG, MGB, Fobi Pouch, and Realize Band.

I am not sure what 2 types of procedures that you are referring to. If you mean RNY and Lapband, then with RNY, I think it is a common thing if you eat the wrong foods. With Lapband, it is not common. I chose Lapband because of the dumping and mal-absorption associated with the RNY.

Dumping is common ONLY with those who have GB where their stomach and most of their small intestines are bypassed and sugar and carbs "dump" directly into the small bowel where undigested sugars and carbs are NOT normally absorbed and cause the pain gas, vomiting and diarreah associated with "dumping syndrome". RNY in particular is the WLS I am totally familiar with. ..Lap banders will not have dumping at all because their anatomy is not altered at all. They just have restriction with a band...They have all their old stomach and acid and intestines in place! Dsers also do not have dumping because they have their pyloric valves which prevents this...I don't know much about the other surgeries...Mainly just the one I had which DOES have Dumping syndrome...BUT Not all RNYers experience dumping the same or at all even...I avoid by eating right and knowing my limits because it's JUST AWFUL! It doesn't always stop me though when I ignore the warning twinges in my pouch! That happens occasionally to me. Or I will have "late dumping" 30 minute to an hour after I eat...but I hear it can happen up to 3 hours after eating for some people! It one reason I rarely try New foods when dining out with friends or family...Not cool! LOL

Sorry, I was referring to the Lap-band and gastric by-pass. My surgery is scheduled for March 31, and I'm still on the fence regarding which one to have. This is the one issue that seems to be on my mind the most.

The other person who explained about gastric by-pass and Lap band is correct. I have the Lap band. I do not have any dumping but if I eat too fast, the food will get stuck and I have to throw it up. I have to cut up my food the size of a pea and chew, chew, and chew. If you have a lot of weight to lose (well over 100 lbs) then the gastric bypass is what I would chose. I didn't understand just how slow it is to lose weight with the band. I must say that I don't have to take all of the vitamins and other things the rest of my life. Good luck with what ever you chose. The hardest part of all of this journey is deciding to do something and you are already on your way. Susan

I thought it was possible to dump on all wls types since dumping includes nausea, vomiting, foaming and diarrhea along with some other things. You might also consider the VSG, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.

There is no dumping with lapband because no part of your digestive track is missing. You can get a productive belch if you eat too fast, or swallow too large a bite that will not slip through the band. This is a small amount of food that comes back up. It technically is not vomiting since it never got to the stomach in the first place. Donna Oland lapband 4/19/07 lost 115 lbs

Thanks to all of you for your answers and insight. As it turns out, I will be having gastric bypass on March 31. So, it's onwards and upwards! Er......I mean onwards and inwards!?
