With RNY surgery people tend to lose some to a lot of hair between 3 to 8
months into it. It then will grow back if you eat right. Lots of protien
and keeping your vitamins up will help cut down on the hair loss. Not
everyone losses hair but most do. It is temporary.

I have long thick hair...at 3 mos it started falling out by the
handfuls...I'd find hair everywhere! In my underware! Stuck in my
bra...tickling my arms and back! It drove me crazy...They suggest B vits
and biotin, protein, plenty of water vits...But it just happens...Those
things help...but it helps to know that it's a common process starts at 3
mos and ends 3 mos later (That just an average) By the time I could see my
entire scalp in the sun light...I noticed that my receding hair line had
new growth and I was SOOOOO happy...The new growth was rapid once it
started and grew back with a nicer consistency even! My hair used to be
slightly wiry...and is now smooth...It was wavy and would frizz up...and
now it makes the cutest ringlets of bouncy curls if I don't blow dry...It's
all filled back in and shiny and healthy! I wore mine up a lot to keep it
from falling out faster and all over the place...That's about all you can
do!

Thanks for the post...I am only 2 months post op and have noticed that my
hair has some breakage and seems very dry. I figured it was due to the
change in protein and water levels. I have trouble getting in my water
totals for the day. After reading a couple other posts, I may be a little
early yet and my loss is yet to come...Just one more thing to deal with.
Lots of changes, just shows how important our nutrition is.

I had surgery August 2. I wear my hair cut short and after 6 months of
taking biotin, all the vitamins etc., I give up. It must be the anesthesia
which causes hair loss. I can do no more. I have the shiniest scalp in
town!

I am not sure if I just got lucky or what but I never lost any hair but I
have a good friend that did lose a bunch. I started taking Biotin
(purchase at vitamin store) a month surgery and still take it---may be it
was and is overkill but it was worth it to me just to be safe. I have thin
hair to begin with so I did not want to risk it.

I had hair loss starting three months after surgery. My hair was thin to
begin with, so I was getting very nervous!
Then I tried "hair, skin and nails" - it is a vitamin supplement
that I found at CVS (also saw it at Walmart).
The hair loss stopped completely within a week of taking this supplement.
Don't see new hair growth yet - but at least I am keeping what I have.
Godd luck!

Teresa, yes many people lose some hair after surgery. It happens. Ask
youself this, would you rather have all your hair now and the weight, or is
it worth the risk to lose about 100 pounds and lose some hair? I took the
hair loss, and just celebrating all the way to 120 pounds lost. It
happens, it is just hair. There are wigs if it gets too bad. Would you
avoid chemo to keep your hair? This is your life we are talking about. I
never met someone who was bald, and it all grows back if you eat right and
work at it, it is for some just part of the process. Take care, Patricia

Hi, I had Lap RNY on 7/18/2008. I started taking Boitin two months before.
I also made sure I had all of my protien daily including using Unjury
unflavored mix, making jello and freezing it. I really think between the
two I made it past the point of not losing my hair. I have backed off on
the Unjury but still take the Biotin. I get all of my protien from my food.
