Question:
help with some abbreviations-- r\n\r\n\r\n ???
I am considering WLS too, I am looking at the lapband. I have been reading the OH Q& A- they have been a big help to me. I am making it through most of the abbreviations but was hoping someone would answer the question about R\n\r\n\r\n -- please help- what does that mean? i am confused too. thank you so much for your answer- i hope to be on the losing team sometime in 2009! thx, Cora S. — jnclshrum (posted on November 23, 2008)

I don't know where you saw this..or in what context it was used, but I
would think it is perhaps Rny? otherwise I have no clue...sorry

I think that is an error in computer translation when the person
posted...It happens often...You must MUST learn the language of
"typos" if you ever want to understand most of the posts! I am
one that makes many small and stupid typos because I am in a rush many
times and type super fast but not accurate! I think all the back slashes
are just that, mistakes...but I see the r and n and assume it is RNY which
stands for either Laproscopic (meaning they don't cut , they use tools
inserted in little ports in your abdomen) Or Open (where they cut a 3-5
inch slit in your upper abdomen and do the surgery by hand) Roux-En-Y
Gastric Bypass Surgery (Lap RNY or Open RNY or just RNY or RGB) ... ...Good
luck with your upcoming surgery and remember that many people do not
specify which surgery they have when asking a question. Those who answer
questions, often have to go tot he person's profile to find what surgery
they had to answer the question properly. I didn't have lap band so I don't
usually comment on Lap Band questions unless it is a universal question
that can apply to all surgeries.(Like what protein powder tastes good or
"help, I'm scared"..... Lap Banders have a totally different
operating system than the RNY'ers...The band is nothing more than a band
around an operating stomach which gets inflatted for
"restriction" (which is the ONLY commonality with RNY...who also
have restriction but not a band) ...The RNY leaves the stomach dissected (a
pouch which lap banders also refer to their banded top stomach as a
"pouch") and rerouted to the large intestines...So the difference
is HUGE. RNYers have restriction, malabsorption of nutrients,
malabsorption of fats, and they need to follow certain "pouch rules.
Since RNYers no longer have their big stomach to digest food they have
little acid in their stomachs which many vits need to absorb into the
body...Lap Banders do not have this issue...So the vits and supps are
totally different. Some vits are absorbed in the small intestines...The
RNYers small intestines are bypassed...THUS... MALABSORPTION of
nutrients...So while lap banders can take any of the vits regular people
take....RNYers have to take certain forms of vits and minerals for the best
absorption and that can cause much MUCH confusion as well. You have lap
banders saying things like "there is no difference between calcium
carbonate and calcium citrate...And in a regular belly that is true...In an
RNY belly that is FALSE!!!! Same thing with Iron and Vit's A,D,E, and K
and Vit B12. SO when reading answers to questions...ALWAYS double check
and do not take medical advice online if you are in serious or chronic pain
or feel something is wrong...We are just people who are trying to help with
our expereinces. SO you see how this can all get very confusing...KNOW your
surgery...Research it on your own...You should also research other
surgeries to see which is best suited for you too....learn the
"rules" of the surgery you are having...Learn everything there is
to know... long term care, diet and exercise, supplementation of vitamins
or proteins...etc. Hope that helps Good luck!
