Question:
anyone have a marginal gastric ulcer post op?
i am 4 yrs post op roux-n-y bypass. i did very well, losing 110 lbs. this past friday, i was hospitalized for what turned out to be a bleeding marginal ulcer. it developed at a suture site. apparently this is known to happen to bypass patients. i required blood transfusions and now need to be on medication to heal the ulcer. has anyone had this or know of someone that had this? how common is this? — libby17326 (posted on October 2, 2008)

Hi Joan - I had this happen a year and a half after my rny bypass. i had
surgery oct 2005. was in the hospital for 11 days in feb 2007 for 2
bleeding ulcers. had 8 units of blood. i am still on Protonix and have
been told wil lbe on the rest of my life so not t ohave any ulcers return.
I was not warned that this was possible. but now when i talk to RNY
patients- i always warn them. what troubled me was I didn't have any
symptoms of an ulcer. i just woke up one morning pooping black stool and
throwing up blood. was rushed to the ER. Good luck with your ulcers.
They should heal usually within 6 weeks. i would ask your doctor if you
need to be on anti-acid meds the rest of your life...

Actually I am 6 weeks out from bypass. Today I had a EGD. They had to put a
scope in my throat and dilate the openings to my pouch and small
intestines. I too have an ulcer and have to take the medicine. I have to
take a liquid one and it is really bad, lol. I have to take two meds for at
least 2 months to heal it. I haven't had any others develop but you having
yours so far out scares me a bit. Take the meds like they said and I am
sure you will be fine. Please keep us informed on how you do.

I do not have an answer but rather a questions to add...
I am 14 days post op today and I am wondering if anything can be done to
avoid ulcers? Also, what causes them?
Thanks,
Gina
