My best friend just had Lapband in May and she had a small hiatal hernia,
which they repaired during the surgery. I had RNY in November 07, and also
had a small hiatal hernia which was repaired during the surgery.

I had Lapband surgery on 7/7/08. It was thought that I had a hernia and
the Dr was prepared to fix it during the Lapband surgery. It ended up that
I did not. Now, most surgeons do or should do both at the same time. Make
sure yours will or find one that does.

I had a large one and he fixed along with placing the lapband and I feel
great now no more acid reflux which I had since 1995.

I had what my surgeon stated was the largest hernia he had ever seen and he
fixed it along with placing the band 6/17/08. So it can be done. Just
remember you are higher risk for slippage with a hernia. i had to do a
three week only clear fluid diet after surgery to make sure it healed well
and absolutely no vomiting. This can cause the hernia to slip back. My
recovery was more painful and lasted longer but I am fine now. The surgery
itself also lasted longer. It was 4 hours instead of two hours. My surgeon
says the recovery was harder due to having two surgeries at the same time.
Everyone's body is different. Good Luck.

I had lap band and had a hiatal hernia and since it didn't bother me and I
have had it for 37 years, they left it alone. I haven't had acid reflux
since I had the lap band 4-16-08.

Most people by the time they reach age 60 have a hiatal hernia. If you
google it, or type it into webmd.com they will explain it. I have a small
hiatal hernia, still had lapband surgery, and they didn't fix it because
they said that it wasn't bad enough to do anything with. I would imagine
that you can get the surgery too! Good luck: )
