Question:
concerned about loosing my hiar.

Is folic acid a product that I should take? someone I know that has had the surgery over 3 year ago told me that she took that and it helped her. She didn't loose any hair.    — teresasmiles (posted on January 20, 2008)

Not sure about the folic acid, but I started taking Biotin (above the "reccomended dosage" 2 in the a.m. 2 in the p.m.) at about 4 months post op because of slight hair loss and it certainly helped me! It doesn't work for everyone, nor is there any concrete proof that it does work, but it has also helped my nails immensely and my hair grows faster than ever before. Within just a bit less than a month I could feel the re-growth. Not everyone is going to experience hair loss. My older sister (3 yrs my senior and also had laproscopic RNY) had no hair loss at all and I had some (thank God I started out with thick hair). Mine just thinned out, but it's already fuller again and full of body because the re-growth is coming out fast! Good luck and God bless!

I agree - the surgeon our support group works with did a talk at one of our support groups a couple of months ago and has re-looked at the vitamin etc nutrition for WLS patients - he agrees with Biotin and recommends 3000 ug/ Day - I buy mine at GNC - it is the "hair and nails" formula - hope that helps. morning -- folic acid should be part of your daily vitamin regime because of malabsorbtion issues --there is no miracle pill for hair loss -- hair is made up of PROTEIN -- your hair and nails on your body is PROTEIN -- that is the only thing that will help you --keep up with your daily intake of protein -- good luck -- some people swear by Biotin -- but there is no scientific proof that it works

If you are losing your hair, you are not getting enough protein. nothing will stop it other than upping your protein.

My surgeon also told me to expect some potential hair loss 3-4 months out due to the trauma of surgery and the after effects of the anestheia. I have also started taking Biotin as a boost. I have some increased hair loss since my 4 month post op mark. It has decreased somewhat now. I consume approximately 85-105g of protein a day so I don't think increasing my protein will help with the loss. Susan

I was told to take Biotin 5000 mcg daily. That really works for the hair loss.

Someone suggested I take more Biotin for hair loss. I asked my nutritionist and she said just take your daily vitamin as you do. She suggested I eat more protein daily. I have been doing that and it has helped alot. You really don't want to over dose on vitamins as that can cause other problems. Talk to your nutritionist. I take 2 chewable Flintstones Complete vitamins daily and 2 chewable Caltrate Calcium + D plus a day. I make sure I am getting my 60-80 grams of protein a day.
