Question:
Water Consumption.....AND the gym
Do we need to drink more water when we go to the gym? I know the goal is 64oz each day; but if I drink 20oz at the gym because I'm working out; does that mean I need to drink an additional 20oz because I'm sweating and working out...so whaat I drank at the gym doesn't count cause it's just replacing what I sweated out? — hatda (posted on January 11, 2008)

LOL ah, dont think so... I was told that 64 oz would suffice. I work out
every day and drink between 40-64 oz water a day.. ugh I know, dont get my
64oz of water every day. Good Luck! Lax

The idea is to keep yourself properly hydrated. The "64 oz" rule
is probably there for folks who have had "recent" surgery and
need rules to live by before life gets back to normal. Even at that, it's
just a "rule of thumb"; a little more, a little less, that's OK
too. If you are going to the gym on a regular basis, you are probably well
along the path to normalcy. "Listen" to your body. When you feel
thirsty, drink! If you are feeling like you are filled to the gills, stop
drinking so much.

It's all about water balance.... if you are going to the gym and working
out an hour a day, even with the most strenuous exercise, it's unlikely
that you are producing 20oz of sweat.
You should always drink when exercising because its important to replenish
not just water but electrolytes.... but unless you are doing prolonged
exercising in high heat for a prolonged amount of time, you don't need to
add another 20oz.
It *is* possible to drink too much water. You aren't anywhere near it with
64oz even if you added another 20oz, but there is a such thing as too much
water and it can kill you. Google "water intoxication" if you
are interested. It's interesting stuff to know. :)
Best wishes.
