Question:
Has anyone had "dumping" with Stevia ?

I am waiting to have surgery and I was wondering - would I have trouble with this sugar subsitute. 501cynthiac    — 501cynthiac (posted on November 26, 2007)

I used SPlenda and Equal and have not had any problems.

I've used a couple of sugar substitues shortly after RNY surgery, wiht no problems. But you have to remember, RNY is not a "clone surgery"--everyone responds slightly different to foods after surgery. Personally, sugar doesn't bother me, but I keep that in mind and minimize any sugar intake. Some people are in the bathroom for hours from just a Lifesaver, a small portion of pasta, small amounts of "fast food"--either prepared from frozen at home or purhcased at a fast food outlet. Try one new food each day, and that way you'll know which new food is causing a problem. That's the only way you can predict how your body will react to anything you eat.

My dietician has said she knows of no one who has had dumping with Stevia. My taste for it changes after surgery and I do not like the taste of it any longer. Good luck with surgery; it is a great ride to health. I am 82 pounds down and still counting after three and a half months.

Stevia is an herb, much like mint. It doesn't trigger the pancreas to do any crazy things so no, it would not cause dumping. The item that contains might cause vomiting or diarrhea, of course, but that would be the FOOD, not the stevia.

Nope. I have had WONDERFUL success with Stevia. I even made a sugar free french silk pie for Thanksgiving that was awesome. I've made BBQ sauce with it also that tastes wonderful and sweet, but no sugar! I love the stuff. (You just have to be careful to not overuse it or it tastes nasty. Following a recipe really helped me! ) Let me know if you want any recipes or do a Google search. I've found wonderful stuff online & have cookbooks that use it also. A lot of the recipes use Stevia and Splenda together for a synergistic sweetening effect.

I use Splenda and others but have never tried the substitute you mention. I've never had a problem with any sugar substitute, either before or after RNY surgery. The probability that you are 'dumping', since you are now awaiting surgery, is quite low. Here is a quote from the Mayo Clinic site: "...food and juices from your stomach move to your small intestine in an unregulated, abnormally fast manner. This accelerated process is most often related to changes in your stomach associated with surgery." So your problem with a particular substitute will probably continue after either RNY or Lapband surgery since you may be having a reaction to something in it. Note that "dumping" is common among us RNYers but seldom occurs with Lapbanders.
