Question:
Will I qualify for surgery if my problem is a slow metabolism?
I have been told that my problem isn't overeating. It's not eating enough. That I have an incredibly slow metabolism and that's how I got so big. I eat once or twice a day and it's usually cereal or something like that. But I'm 5'7" and almost 400lbs. If this is true, will gastric bypass still work for me? — dragontears (posted on August 10, 2007)

I just saw my Nutritionist yesterday and she said exactly the same thing to
me. I am 5/5 weight 275. She told me I was starving myself by not eating
enough Protien. Our Metabolism runs off this and when you do not get at
least 60grams a day your body goes into starvation mode and hold onto
calories for dear life..It actually thinks you are starving..This causes
cravings for things all the time. If you get enough protien, you are half
as likely to have cravings,no being tired all the time, or enemic. Think of
yourself like a hibernating bear..its body doesn't burn calories because
its storing them incase you need them later. This is very true..so eat your
protien!

been proven that people who ae over weight have promblem sleeping. because
your over weight you qualify. When i went to see my surgent i told him i
was so frustraited trying to loose weight i went to a weightloss dr. for 3
yrs and still wasnt successfull with loosing and keeping it off. i had lost
50lb but gained it back a 1 yr later. back in forth with diet pills
struggling to loose weight. so my ins. automaticaly aproved me with no

One of my problems before gastric bypass was an extremely slow metabolism.
Now I have an awesome one! Because I am building muscle, my metabolism is
working even when I rest. In answer to your question YES YES YES! I am
5'9" and 3/4 inches (I usually round up to 5'10") and I was 509
lbs but now have lost 80.5 lbs...As long as you follow the rules, and eat
sensibly you should have no problem. I often have to force myself to eat,
because I know if I don't it will affect my newly acquired metabolism.
Good luck and God Bless!
