Question:
FAT FREE TURKEY CHILI @ 11 DAYS OUT

I TOO, LIKE ALOT OF OTHER POST-OPS GOT TIRED OF THE LIQUID/PUREED DIET AND ADVANCED MYSELF BY TRYING A LITTLE BIT OF SCRAMBLED EGGS, MASHED POTATOES, REFRIED BEANS, AND TODAY...ALMOST AN ENTIRE CAN OF TURKEY CHILI(OVER THE COURSE OF AN HOUR) I DO NOT FEEL OVERLY STUFFED. I STOPPED BECAUSE I THOUGHT I SHOULD. THIS SCARES ME ALITTLE BIT...IS IT POSSIBLE THAT I'VE STRETCHED MY POUCH ALREADY? I DON'T DRINK WHEN I EAT. PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR OPINIONS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT SIZE POUCH I HAVE (I KNOW THAT SOUNDS IGNORANT-BUT IT'S TRUE)    — mrsSmith6830 (posted on September 18, 2006)

Your doctor should have gone over all the information about the size of your pouch before the surgery and a lot more that goes along with this surgery, mine would only hold 2 ounces. This is only my experience after having my surgery a year ago. I have only followed what I have been told by my Nutritionist for the past year and I have lost 132 pounds, I weighed 329 before my surgery. I have physical disabilities or I may have lost more, I am still losing. I was to scared to do anything that I was not instructed to do for the fear of stretching my pouch or getting sick and I can tell you that what she told me and what the doctor told me was the truth and I have never been sick and I eat 3 meals a day and 3 snacks a day but I on liquids for 3 weeks after my surgery, I to was tired of liquids but I knew I had to do it that the best was yet to come. I worked my way but in ounces by weighing my food and using a 1/4 cup measuring everytime I ate, this is how I was instructed by my Doctor and Nutritionist until you know by looking at it so many time just how much you are eating , I would ask my doctor or if you have access to a Nutritionist speak to them because you could hurt the tool (pouch) that was given to you by the doctor to help you get the weight off and keep it off. I have good muscle tone for my conditon, I have to have a left hip replaced and a right knee replaced. Good Luck and take care of your Body.

Every Doc is different out there in what you are to do & not do however, I was on pureed foods for 6 weeks. It gets old but your pouch has to heal & the turkey chili is not a bad choice accept you should not eat more that 2 to 3 oz as a meal. I ate 3 meals a day & measured what I ate. You can not keep eating or yes you can stretch the pouch. Stick to 3 meals 4 oz. meals a day along with 64 oz. of water a day. You can work up to the 64 oz. of water but drink as much water as possible. Don't gulp water or you will have problems. If you are not measuring your food you must start doing that now. Change & make your habits good ones during this first year becuase if you don't make good habits stick while they honeymoon period is here you will have problems & weight gain later. Congratulation on being on the losing side & take it slow & you will be fine. Just remember no more than 4 oz. of anything at meal time. If it takes you up to an hour to eat that 4 oz. that is o.k. it will get better down the road. Chili is good protein source so is a better choice than potatoes.

It took me a REALLY long time in the beginning to determine whether I was full...or even hungry for that matter. For that reason, I measured everything. But for me I was also on liquids for 2 weeks. Yes, it's boring. But I honestly didn't WANT to eat. I still don't half the time. What you tried isn't necessarily bad but you advanced yourself - you went against doctor's orders. S/he knows best. This would be a good time to see a nut. to discuss some good protein-rich options for you because your pouch can obviously handle these foods. Good luck!

vicki, you should be eating 3 meals a day and at least 2 protein focused "snacks" a day and they should last no more than 15 minutes.Do not continue to eat after that. That is considered grazing.in that time frame eat your protein first.when you can consume 3 oz of protein then add a very small amount of vegetable.

Food is a great source of nutrition--- it serves an important role. However, like oxygen, it doesn't have to be exciting to work. It is, unfortunately, a lot tougher to implement such a new mindset regarding food than it is to type a few pithy words in response to your question-- and it is a struggle that I continue to have nearly 4 years out, so don't think that you are alone. But, the effort is worth it. Your question raises some practical concerns. First, you referene eating mashed potato-- but they have little nutritional value, just add carbohydrates to your system and will slow down weight loss. Plus, your body processing of white carbs can stimulate craving for more. Secondly, the volume of chili is a little problematic-- if you are not feeling satiety this early out, talk to your surgeon. Also, as a general rule many of us try to impose a strict time limit on our meal (helps to teach and re-inforce portion control). For many of us, this time limit is about 20-30 minutes. Just try to remember that there are lots of rules and restrictions that evolve over time-- no one masters everything all at once and many of us who made numerous mistakes found our way and enjoy great success. Good luck in your journey.

Are you losing weight? Are you getting your 80+ grams of protein in? Are you following your surgeon's rules? If so stop worry and just continue to do the right things and all will be fine.

You'll have those days when you can eat an incredible amount, and then there will be days that you feel stuffed after a few bites. Around the time I cycle, I never get full. I gain weight and bloat. Afterwards the weight falls right off.

Follow your diet plan. If the doctor did not fgive you one, you should go to a dietician. The liquid diet is boring, but you need to give your pouch time to heal. Don't rush things.

I can't offer much advice, but have discovered myself that if I chewed whatever I was eating very well I could eatmore then expected because the food goes right through the pouch, almost like drinking water or eating soup broth. I dont know about stretching your pouch, but I think if you did any damage you would know, You probably would have some pain.. But that is just my opion..

I had something similar happen to me, I did not upgrade myself or anything like that but I was always hungry and I also felt that I could eat more than I should have and it would worry me, then at around my 3rd week I felt the change I couldn't hardly eat anymore, someone on here told me that it was my old stomach ( the part not being used anymore) telling me I was hungry when I really wasn't. I think you this is just a phase that your going through, should be over soon.

I didn't feel hunger or any sense of fullness until I was about 3 weeks out ... So I measured everything. We were allowed 1/4 to 1/2 cup of pureed meats after the first 10 days ... Make sure you measure your food until you get sensation back in your pouch.
