Question:
I am 7 weeks post op from GPS. I lost 15 pounds the first week and have lost another
20 since then. However, for over a week now, I haven't lost any. I have been slacking off the protein drinks to the point where I don't even drink one a day(I just have such a hard time drinking them because of the taste). Is this the reason I'm not continuing to lose. I also began Curves about a week ago. Help. I'm terribly bummed out. — Gingee (posted on September 5, 2006)

Hi Ginger, I am about 9 months post-op (-120lbs!!), and went through
several little periods where the weight loss kinda stalled. You do need to
continue with your protein shakes though, they will kick start your loss,
drink one in the morning for sure.. first thing when you get up. Maybe try
another kind, find something that you will like so that you will continue
to drink them. Its so important. I have been drinking the AdVantedge
ones.. they are in a foil cardboard box, I get them at Walmarts, or Sams..
they have 15 gms of protein, so I drink one in the morning and another at
night. I also supplement with those South Beach breakfast bars.. the
chocolate ones are just awesome and they have 10 gm of protein. You can
find them with the cereal bars at most grocery stores.. try them out.. it
may help, plus they actually taste good, also dont forget to drink your
water and congrats on the loss so far, you are doing great.. dont be hard
on yourself, it will happen for you!!! Best wishes, April

Great job on your initial loss- you need to get your protein in. There
are tons of different types. I've switched several times now. Early on it
was Isopure from GNC - already mixed but then I got sick of it. I also
used protein powder and mixed with water or milk from the Scitec line of
Delite protein - lots of different choices. my fav right now is the Muscle
Milk premixed in chocolate. You will start to lose your hair and be weak
if yo don't get your protein in. Good luck! you have to eat/drink in
order to lose weight. I am almost 1yr post-op and lost 104lbs. its a long
journey but well worth the troubles along the way... good luck!

Hi Ginger- I am almost 5 mos post op- the first month the weight came off
like clock work but now I will lose 1-2 pounds every other day for 2-3
weeks then be in a holding pattern for about a week (but I tend to lose
inches during this time) don't panic slow and steady will get you to the
finish line and help you make permanent life long changes and not become
one of the ones who regains the weight. As far as the protein drinks- I
agree I dislike the taste so I found Solgar Whey to Go tablets (11 gms
protein per tab) I take 3-4 per day and let my diet do the rest. They are
huge so I chew them- not the best tasting but definately better than the
after taste of the drinks. I get them at Vitamen Shoppe. Hope this helps.

Ginger, protein and water play a big part in our weight loss. I would
suggest that you try sample protein packets from Bariatriceating.com or
Vitalady.com. The only one that I have found that I like so far is Matrix
5.0 chocolate. I am 6 weeks post op and I am in a stall now but I can tell
I am losing inches. I am going to do the measuring this afternoon so that
I am not so scale crazy. Best of luck....

I did not drink protein shakes for almost a year. My Doc did not believe in
them. You do not have to have them to lose the
weight. If you are eating mostly protein drinking your water &
getting some kind of exercise in your daily routine & no snacking the
weight will keep falling you just lost 35 lbs in just
overe amonth. When did you ever do that before. Your body is playing catch
up. Do Not Panic. Keep doing what you have been doing & the weight will
continue. If you plan to go back to the shakes make sure it is Whey protein
they are better tasting than most & are better for us than the others
that are out there. Good Luck & do not panic. You are doing
great!!Marilyn, the Bearlady

congratulations Ginger! I am 1 week post op. I have never liked protein
drinks so I am learning to be creative. GNC has Whey Protein and is low in
sugar and calories and has 20gms of protein per scoop. I've been using the
banana flavor this week. I take my blender add 1/2 cup of skim milk, a few
drops of coconut extract and sometimes I even add some almond extract, some
crushed ice cause I like it really cold and then a scoop of the protein
powder. Blend, pour in a glass, top with sprinkles of cinnimon and enjoy.
This makes a little more than what I can handle but it is yummy! Be
creative!

Hello Ginger~I enjoy WHEY shakes for my protein and get at least two down a
day=60grams of protein. I prefer Whey because it comes in 95 flavors! I
have also found that if I make them in a blender with the minimum amount of
water (4oz.), I can get them down easier than when I add ice cubes...Good
Luck and enjoy the losses already! :O) You're well on your way!!! Protein
IS very important!

About the Solgar Whey to Go tablets...I just did a web search on them, and
the dosage is NINE TABLETS per day, which provides an additional 11 grams
of protein. Each tablet does not contain 11 grams of protein. Sigh...it
seemed too good to be true. :)

35 pounds in 7 weeks is a lot!!!! That is five pounds aweek! I don';t
know why you don't think you are losing much. I did not lose nearly that
fast!
We dio all hit plateaus where we don't lose. I actually occasionally GAIN
weight! My husband says that my body is just readjusting itself during
those times, and often people tell me that I look like I just lost weight
during those times. You are rprobably fine. Just make sure to keep up
your protein! I know it tastes awful, but you just have to drink up!

I forgot to say that you may also be putting on muscle, and it weighs more
than fat, so that might be it. Once your body adjusts, you will probably
begin losing again.

I will be 9 weeks post op on Wednesday, and have lost 42 pounds. The
protein drink is not that bad to me. I put 2 scoops into a shaker every
morning with 1 per cent milk. I use Pro 5 which is 40 grams per scoop.
This is what my bariatric coordinator sugestd I use. Shake it really well
then divide it into 4 four ounce baby food jars.
It is really rich and cramy, comes in chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and
banana. I can't drink it with water, have to use the milk, extra protein.
