Congradulations!! I know you are very excited. When I went to the hospital
I took my pillow (hate the ones the hospital use), comfortable PJ's or
gown, house shoes to wear when walking and a change of clothes for when I
went home. As far when I got home I had a few cans of cream of potatoe
soup; jello, broth, and crystal light. Hope this helps and good luck, you
will do great!

I made sure to take my brush, hair bands, toothbrush and toothpaste, DVD
player, deodorant and extra clothes. I didnt bother with pjs or robe
because I would have just bled on them when I began my period, so I
recommend some pads (you wont be able to reach down for a tampon). I did
bring a small pillow to stuff behind my back, because those beds are
UNCOMFORTABLE! Oh and bring a flavored chap stick that you like. I used
mine to wet my mouth, by licking it, not eating it lol, quite often before
surgery (since you cant have anything and your mouth WILL get dry)
CONGRATS!

Congratulations on your up coming surgery. All of the things that the
others listed are what I took. Although I found that a photo of my kids
and the wonderful new puppy were my biggest comfort. I hope that your
surgery turns out as wonderful mine did. Best move that I ever made. Many
prayers coming your way. Mitakuye Oyasin, Jill H.

My recommendation, panties to put under that OPEN gown, and ear plugs
because hospitals are very noisy. I was only there for 28 hours from time
of check in, so I didn't need much.

The BEST thing I took was a poir of loose pj bottoms! You are asked to get
up and walking, and that really does help with the gas. So when I went up
and down the hall, or to the bathroom (I had a roommate with lots of
visitors, and some were male) I didn't have my bottom hanging out for all
the world to see. (My hospital gave me standard sized hospital gowns, not
bariatric sized). The chapstick is really great, as your lips get really
dry. Take a magazine or something light to read. You'll need deoderant,
toothbrush, and something you like to wash your face with. When you feel
up to putting on make-up, you will be sent home! I wore loosefitting
sweats in when I went to the hospital, had my husband put them in the car,
and then had him bring them back in when it was time for me to leave.
Other than that, slippers you can slide your feet into, a few pairs of
socks, and a few pairs of undies and you should be covered.
At home, I stocked up on some flavored water, protein drink from GNC, soy
milk to mix it with, sugar-free popsicles, sugar-free jello, and some
herbal tea (which has turned out to be my favorite way to get down all the
liquids). I also found and bought the Flintstones chewable vitamins, and
several packages of Gas-x,( which I used up completely in the first week,
with all the gas). OH! and my favorite pillow. I was a happy camper with
those things. Good luck!

Oops-In my post, I meant I bought the vitamins and gas-x for home use, not
the hospital, and the pillow-you need that at the hospital, as there's just
don't have the right softness like your very own pillow does! Congrats on
your upcoming surgery!

When I had my surgery I brought my own night gown, bath robe, slippers,
change of underclothes, and your personals. I would also suggest bringing
some type of lip balm and some of your favorite smelly lotion and a good
book. Although I did not read it would be a good idea. When I got home my
husband had made me some sugar free jello and pudding. Popsicles are great
also because they can count as part of your liquid. My surgeon did not
have me on a liquid diet when I came home; I did blended foods for 4 weeks
and then went to soft foods which I am still on and it has been almost 8
weeks (Monday); I have to be careful what I eat, no beef, it makes me
really sick.
Good luck with your surgery and I will be thinking of you

I used NONE of my own belongings in the hospital. I wore the hospital
gowns (fresh one daily) and their slippers...even used their toothbrush and
paste! I took my own, just never bothered to open my bag! The first 24
hours was spent sleeping on and off. I wore the same clothes home that I
arrived in, other than a pair of clean panties.
I had Lap Rny and had NO DESIRE to wear panties or pj bottoms since I
had a drain tube and didn't want anything near my incisions....especially
of an elastic nature!
Everyone is different, but honestly, didn't care too much about
much.......on a pca for pain and was comfortable most of the time. Wore a
gown backwards as a robe and glad I didn't wear my own as my drainage tube
leaked and I ended up changing gowns several times. (would have just
gotten my own robe and pjs bloody) I did brush my hair the second day!
;o)
Good luck and don't worry too much about the hospital stay being like
going to a hotel. They will provide all you need and frankly, it was nice
to be able to just place those soiled gowns in the hamper at the hospital
and not take my own home. Jmo, of course!

Don't bring alot of your "stuff" there is very little storage
space in the hospital room and don't bring a ipod,cd-player or walkman, it
can get lost or stolen easily and the hospital isn't responsible if they
do. Wear comfortable an loose clothes and slide on shoes to the hospital
and wear this outfit home. Bring chapstick and a hair brush or comb. I
wore the hosptial gown, the gowns do get soiled and you don't want to ruin
your own pj's. you can always wear a second gown turned backwards for a
robe. I had and iv in my arm and a drain in my stomach for several days,
they furthest thing from my mind was wearing my own clothes. My family
brought me magazines, but I never looked at them I had the TV and the PCA
morphine pump to keep my occupied. Also plan to be up walking ASAP. Good
Luck

I had surgery on 4-26 and i brought a nightie and i wore the same clothes
there that i wore home. I didn't even use any of my stuff I wore the
hopital gowns and the slippers they gave me. they even supplied me with a
toothbrush, paste, shampoo, comb, and soap to wash with. They supplied the
washclothes and towels. They will take care of any need you have. and the
popsicles were YUMMY.

Congrats, I am sure you are VERY excited. This is truly a remarkable time
in your life.
I took my body pillow (makes it easier to lay on your side), my
favorite blanket, CHAP STICK(your lips get very dry when you are not
allowed ANYTHING by mouth), hand lotion (everything else gets really dry
too something that smells good to overcome that hospital smell), slippers,
housecoat, clock (I hate not knowing what time it is).
At home, crystal lite, S/F jello, broths (lower sodium or homemade),
caffeine free tea bags, Splenda, lots of ice, S/F popsicles (check with
your surgeon before buying cream soups, my surgeon still doesn't want me on
cream soups or fruit juice and I am 9 months post). If you are allowed
milk, try putting in 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract and a tsp of Splenda
(tastes like a milkshake). Something to give you a little different taste.
Do you have a Power of Attorney, or Living Will? Make sure that someone you
trust (like the person you entrust with your POA) has a copy as well as the
hospital and your dr. Make sure your family knows about it and who you
entrusted. Make sure you get them notarized. I don't mean to scare you, but
better safe than sorry.
I also got myself a journal, just one of those cheapy things from a
dollar store, and I wrote down everything in it. I recorded my questions to
the doctor and his answers, my weight, my fears, things I wanted to share
with my family if anything happened, etc. Sometimes I still look things up
in it, and I stick things in there that I find on line that will help me,
or others.
Some people suggested a new hobby so you have something to do while
healing. I just got on the computer LOL
Good luck, my prayers will be with you.
Ciao,
Berta
