Question:
Always get sick after surgery of any kind, should I tell surgeon?
everytime I have had surgery, I get sick to my stomach and sometimes I vomit other times I don't. Should I tell the surgeon before surgery, just in case I do get sick afterward? — Peggy1 (posted on March 21, 2006)

Oh absolutely! But better than that, talk to the ansethesiologist. Usually
they come to talk to you right before surgery. In my case, after general
anesthesia I tell them that I violently puke my guts out, get hives and
can't pee for 24 hours. So make sure I get something for the pukes and
hives and put a foley in while I'm under! Whatever your concerns are, TALK
to both the surgeon and ansethialogist.... the second one is the best one
as he/she will be the one to give the drugs in the IV. I was extremely
worried about the puking after wls. Whatever she gave me was great. I never
puked once that day of surgery. Next morning I got dry heaves and was
afraid it would hurt my pouch. I called a nurse and she gave me a shot.
Don't know what it was, but it stopped the heaving and kept me from puking.
Anyway, do tell them. Be honest. Most medical people want to do right by
us. But they can't if WE are NOT honest. Best of luck! :)

Yes tell them every thing. I let my ansethesiologist know that I can not
lie flat on my back. They have extra blankets to pad my fake hips. I let
them know I get really cold and start shaking. So to keep from scaring
them I let them know all of this. They take notes and ask you all of this
before you go under.

Warn surgeon WELL BEFORE WLS They will pull the records of previous
operations, and learn what works better. I quit breathing after minor knee
surgery and had a horrid experience. panic attack and all. WLS was a breeze
because they knew what happened preeviously.

Make sure you tell your surgeon and anesthesiologist. I, too, get sick
when I wake up from surgery. This last time I got the dry heaves but they
gave me something right away and I actually felt like I "came
out" of the fog quicker. Don't know what it is about
anesthesia..............................

Definately- not only the surgeon but also the anestheologist- perhaps
he/she can give you something before anethesia to combat the side-effect of
nausea and vomiting post anesthesia

Peggy, definitely tell them. I to vomit after general anesthesia. I told
the anesthelogist (sp?) and he made sure I was given something before I
woke up. That was the first time I've never vomited after surgery, they
can give you something to combat the nauseau. Best wishes, Dana
