Question:
Clear Acrylic Tongue Piercing
Has anyone worn the clear acrylic piercing during surgery? I'm picking up one of the clear piercing retainers in the hopes of being able to wear it during surgery. The top of the retainer is flat so it won't get in the way of anything... — lil_firestorm (posted on November 28, 2004)

I really can't imagine your dr. letting wear anything in your mouth during
surgery since you will have to be intobated. There is the danger of
anything that is not permanent coming out & being swallowed.

The hospital will more than likely insist that all your jewelry be removed
and that includes your body piercings. The liability of your piercing
coming loose and your choking on it is far too great in an unconscious
state. I had to remove mine. Now you will probably be able to reinsert it
w/in a day of surgery so you will not need to have it redone. Anything
longer than that and it will probably close up. Good luck

Hi! Most likely you will have to take it out. I am fortunate that the doc
doing my TT in January is willing to try letting me keep the retainer in,
but was warned if it interferes in any way it's coming out and I have to
sign a liability release for any damage to my tongue in the event that the
tube should get caught on the retainer and rip my tongue or any other
mishaps. Now that I think about it, it's kind of funny that we are so
willing to undergo major surgery, but don't want to have to pierce our
tongues again??? LOL Anyhoo, good luck!

Jennifer--I didn't have the tongue stud when I had my WLS, but a few years
back when I did have the stud, and had surgery, I was allowed to take a
piece of dental floss, thread it through, and tie it in a knot. That kept
my hole open, but nothing to get in their way.
Ask you doc if that's an option.
Good Luck!
