Question:
Almost 3 months post-op. Am I doing ok?
I had open RNY on August 14 2003. I am now able to eat whatever I want however I dont eat sugars and breads an things like that. The other day I ate pasta for the first time. I had about a cup of macaroni with red meat sauce. Should I be able to eat that much? Tonight for dinner I had 3 to 4oz piece of steak and about 1/4 cup of mashed potatoes. Is that to much? Should I be eating less? Some days it seems to take more to fill me up then others is that normal? I don't mean to bug you all with questions like this but I am so scared of failing at this chance to get this weight off and I dont want to screw it up. SO I figured you all know best. I have lost 75 pounds so far is that good bad or normal??? Thank you all for taking the time to read and answer my questions. Gool luck to you all :) — Christy M. (posted on November 2, 2003)

Hi Christy! You seem to be doing awesome. It is normal for some days you
can eat more than others. The pasta is a difficult thing for me to eat
much of... maybe half a cup and then I am miserable. However, carbs in
general do go down much easier. I'd make that kind of meal an occasion
rather than the norm. Stick with your protiens and you'll do better in the
long run. Your weight loss is fantastic for this stage. I am about 5.5
months out and have lost 103#. You and I seem to be on the same track.
God bless you!

Im 10 months at 147 wt loss. Im not one to tell you what to eat, But I've
learned that potatoes, rice, breads, pastas, sugar are no no foods cause
of their high carbs, It will send you into plateaus, or slow your weight
loss. I do hear folks eating those foods. So it's your choice. For me no
way. LOL

Somewhere between 3 and 5 months post op, your new tummy gets more
'comfortable' with whats going on and everyone wakes up one day and feels
like they can eat double what they could the day before. LOL Some days I
feel like I could clean out the fridge and others I don't eat a thing.
Also keep a mental note of what you can eat more of. Some things you can
eat more of, softer things usually for me. If you keep eating one of two
things will happen....it will come back up, or it will push on thru. I
knwo if I eat the softer things first (say the mashed potatoes) then eat
the steak (I know, protien first)I can eat more simply because the potatoes
are being pushed out. Another reason to stick to the protien first rule,
protiens arent usually the softest foods. Best of luck to you hun, sounds
like you are perfecty normal. Good job!!!

You are doing great! The previous posters have each given their own
perspective which is exactly what I hope for when I come to this site...as
many different sides as you can get. I am unable to eat steak unless it is
a grilled steak taco from taco bell. I was hoping I wouldn't have this
problem because I do enjoy steak itself, but I need that tortilla or some
type of bread to help it stay down.
As for the amount of weight you've lost, you're doing WONDERFUL!! If you
were 3 months out and only down 20 lbs, then maybe I'd be concerned...but
you're definitely doing something right!
I'm able to eat pasta to, but believe it or not it depends on the shape.
Lasagna is fine, but rotini(sp) forget it!
I do tend to do better if I limit my carbs but I do eat them. I'm six
months out and would love to be at goal, but I have enough problems with
flab & sag without racing to the finish line. That's how I feel about
MY situation.
Wishing you continued success!!!!

Given our limited capacities, we are forced to make food choices that
first, and foremost, provide us with enough protein and that secondly
provide us sufficient vitamins and other nutrients. That being said, why
waste space in your pouch with pasta or potato?
