Question:
When did you stop freezing all the time?

14 months post op and still freeze, especially at the office with the air conditioner on , I wear sweaters to work and have to go out side to warm up in the 90 degree temps, I just can't stand the cold. 90 degrees is just comfortable to me , while others are sweating. just wondering when or if this levels off to a normal body temp.?    — rhondan (posted on July 3, 2003)

I understand completely. I am the same way at work and everywhere else for that matter. I am 13 months out and I am freezing all the time. The 100 degree weather is perfect for me now. My husband thinks I am insane.

I am 2 years out this month and still freezing. Last weekend I was at a wedding in suit and tie. Everyone was too hot but me. I would like to move to florida, cold weater is a killer. This and a sore backside are the price to pay for loosing the weight. In the winter I shower twice a day just to get warm. Disney world in the summer used to be a killer. Now I wonder if it would feel good?

My mother had the surgery in 1992 and she's been freezing the last 11 years! ^_^ It's noted she has low iron and is slightly anemic, so she thinks that may be the problem (but try telling an RN how to take care of themselves). I've met many WLS patients and it's the same with them, so you're not alone. It may also just be the flipside of being obese, since we tend to sweat in 80 degrees just standing still, so losing the weight also loses the high thermostat. The only thing I can really suggest is just keep a sweater with you if you go into the A/C.

I guess I have a different experience than the rest of you. I was freezing all the time during the winter after surgery, but now that I'm 9 1/2 months out, my body temperature seems to have returned to normal - only I don't find the heat as unbearable as I did before!

2 years post and always cold too! It's been very hot here in Delaware last few weeks and I've been out walking and gardening high noon...but it's like a ghost town. People think I'm kidding or exaggerating when I say I'm comfortable...inside my office building I walk around with a sweater and goose pimples. I keep telling folks I'll eventually get used to not "wearing" my natural thermal wear. But Idunno. It sure beats being miserably hot all the time though! -Kim open RNY 7/17/01 -145ish

My daughter and I are slightly over 3 years post-op and are still cold all the time. We have just accepted the fact that we always need to dress warmly or have an extra blanket at night. The other three more recent WLS post-ops in our family are still struggling with this "problem" :-) I'm sorry, but I'm not sure that our thermostats ever get turned back up again, but this seems a lot better to me than being drenched in perspiration with every effort or every rise in the temperature! Best wishes!

I'm almost 3 years post-op and still freeze! I thought that once I'd acclimated that it would go away, but it didn't. Fat is an insulator and once you lose it, you'll feel cold.....but I'd trade shivering for the fat any day!

Now I know I am not alone. I am 9 months postop and if the house is not 77-80 degrees I am freezing. I wore shorts yesterday to a restaurant and the mall and I felt like I was wearing them in the middle of winter. My husband just laughs and says my surgeon must have broke my thermostat when he operated on me. I would rather be cold than get the 114.5 pounds back. Just keep dressing warm, that's what I do.

I too suffer this same problem. I'm freezing ALL the time! My fiancee thinks I'm crazy, but I had heard you can have low iron and so I went to my PCP and that was the case! He put me on an iron supplement and now I don't suffer it as bad. Maybe if you saw your PCP and told them what you were feeling they could run the blood tests to see if you too were anemic. I know the supplement has helped me tremendously! Open RNY 8/20/02 -142 lbs.

I am just 2.5 weeks post-op and I have gone from sweating all of the time to freezing my buns off!! What a change!! My family thinks I'm nuts!! They all want the air conditioner on and I'm huddling up in a blanket. Ya know what?? I will take the freezing any day over sweating and being hot!!

I am still more cold-natured than most people, but I finally stopped having to wear flannel pajamas to bed every night. I think I started to feel more comfortable at about my 2 year mark (just a couple of months ago.) I still have a jacket at work (I found that a fleece one is very cozy and warms me up faster than a slick fabric) but usually don't worry about carrying one into stores with me now. I do have to still have one at the movies or I am miserable! LOL I think it was a gradual process but I don't know what triggered it since I have been at the same weight for about 9 months . . .

I'd rather be able to add clothing when feeling cold than to take off all the clothes I can and still be sweating so much I feel sick. I'd like to spend the summer nekkid but people might stare and what a sunburn I would have! LOL. Seriously, I and probably many others here are looking forward to feeling 'cold' in the summer after we have wls. It will be a feeling that I have never experienced. Maybe even I will have to keep a sweater handy?!

isn't it wonderful to not sweat over the tiniest thing? I've been out scraping my house the last few days and it's been great to work hard and only get tiny beads of perperation instead of a stream blinding me! I LOVE snuggling into my comforter at night while hubby is roasting (he's always been skinny!). I have to admit, it was a minor pain this past winter, but like others have said, I'd much rather bundle up to get warm than go to jail for stripping nekid :>)
