Question:
I wake up feeling nauseated every morning and I have since since surgery
I am 7 weeks post op and I am still nauseated of the mornings and it usually goes away, but I hate waking up that way ever morning. Does anyone else experience this? — Noreen M. (posted on July 2, 2003)

Yes, I do, every morning. And, I have to be very careful what I put in my
stomach in the morning. I have found that warm broth works well. I think
it is because our stomach has been empty for so long.

whenever I experienced nausea early on I ate 1 or 2 saltines or an ounce of
plain almonds. Figured they worked when I was pregnant - and whala they
worked on my upset pouch too :>) Is should pass in the not too distant
future!

for the first couple of months I was nauseated when I woke up. I did two
things that seemed to help. First, I had some hot tea (decaff of course),
Then I ate 1/2 of a container of yogurt. For the first 4-5 months, I had to
follow that routin, or I wa s unable ot eat the rest of the day.

Sounds you might have low blood sugar. Can you drink part of a protein
drink right before going to bed? It might help. Also, like the previous
poster said, eat something as soon as you wake up. You might try a saltine
cracker. This sounds a lot like morning sickness and if your blood sugar
is too low, it will cause those symptoms.
I hope you feel better soon.

Hi Noreen, This was addressed at our last support meeting and also during
our consults with Amanda. They said it is probably due to drainage running
down into our pouches during the night from sinuses. Amanda said to drink
a cup of something warm (her choice was hot tea) to break the mucous up and
flush it from our pouches. She also told us that if that doesn't work to
try just a SIP of something with carbonation. It has the same effect. See
Ya Monday night.

I remember this well! Delores is right, its mucous build up and you should
rid it by drinking warm tea.

My doc's explanation of this is that we are in heavy duty ketosis early on
and the ketones in our saliva are nauseating. It happened to me for about 2
months and as soon as water started going down easy without hurting my
pouch that went away. The more you drink the less nauseated you will be. It
is really the opposite of what you would normally be told if you are
nauseated but in this case you are diluting the ketones and flushing your
pouch out.

I was having this same trouble. I tried two things not sure which helped
the most. First of all I make sure to eat a little something just before I
go to bed. Not much because you aren't supposed to lie down right after
eating. So I eat it like 15-30 minutes before I lay down. Secondly, I put
a glass of water beside my bed and every time I wake up I take a small
drink. One of the two or both have really helped me. Good luck in finding
what works for you.

I had the same thing and it lasted through month 2 post-op, then eased and
went away. I always felt better after eating even though it was nauseating
to think of food. And warm was better- so I started having a scrambled egg
with melted cheese. 16 months later, I am still eating that warm scrambled
egg for breakfast! YUM...
