Question:
Anyone on PA Welfare and Medical Assistance (Access)
My son is on welfare and has the PA Access card (medical assistance). His paperwork was sent to the insurance co about two weeks ago by his surgeon's office. We're very nervous waiting to hear, and were wondering if anyone else had this situation and what the outcome was. I don't completely understand the set-up, but when you're on welfare, apparently you have to choose an HMO which governs your health care. His is called "Best Health." We'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who used this insurance. Thanks. — Carlita (posted on January 6, 2003)

Best is an HMO of UPMC and my guess is that he will be covered. I have
patients that have Best and they seem to get everything they need. Good
luck.

UPMC HMO regular is fairly WLS friendly, although they did add some hoops
to jump thru.
