Question:
How long did it take after surgery to return to work?
I have read numerous post and message, but I still haven't find an answer to my question. I am researching Laparoscopic RNY and want to know if anyone out there has had this surgery and how long did take for you to recover and return back to work? Thanks! — WENDY A. (posted on November 15, 2002)

It will depend on what kind of work you do, how fast you heal and your
doctor. I have in home daycare and I went back after 10 days. I still don't
left the little ones, I get help through lunch but I'm on my own after
that. I had open RNY. My friend is a teacher and she went back after 2
weeks.

Hi Wendy, I had my Lap RNY done on 9/17/02 (almost 2 months out!) Anyhow
it was done on a Tuesday and I was out that week and the following week.
So in total I was out exactly 9 work days. Of course it depends on the
individual and the sort of job they have. I am a financial analyst so I
sit at my computer all day, so it was very easy to come back. In fact I
was soooo tired of laying around at home I was HAPPY to be back at work.
If you have any other questions please feel free to email me
[email protected].
Good luck! :)

I had lap RNY on a Friday and went back to work Monday morning. I missed 1
day of work. Didn't tell anybody about having the surgery and nobody
noticed I didn't feel real well....I guess I was a pretty good actress..I
have a desk job.

Had LAP-RNY on Tuesday, October 8th, home from hospital on October 10th.
Back to work the following Tuesday, because Monday was Columbus Day. In
reality, I went back too soon, but if I stayed home I would have gone nuts.
I am the Principal of a Middle School.

Gosh, I feel like the biggest wimp....I had lap RNY and was out of work 3
weeks. I tried to go back at 2 weeks, but after 3 hours was so tired and
achy I figured I'd give myself another week -- which, for me, was
necessary. Good luck!

I had the lap RNY on a Wednesday and took the following week off. Should
have taken one more week though. On the slow days at work I was able to
leave early. Thank goodness! I would go home and sleep for three hours. Way
too fatigued. Take one more week then what you think you should. Trust me.

Open RNY, back to work in 10 days. It just depends on how well you do and
how quickly you heal, we all vary! Good luck!

I went back to work in a full-time office position 8 days post-lap RNY. I
was more tired than usual at the end of the day, and my tummy was sore to
touch, but I had not told my co-workers about the surgery and I don't think
that anyone noticed anything out of the ordinary. My daughter teaches a
class of 4 yr. old preschoolers, and returned to work 2 weeks after her lap
RNY. She observed our surgeon's instructions about limited lifting for the
first 6 weeks and she did great. Best wishes!
