Question:
Will pre-op Low Carb dieting be ok?

My surgen requiers that I have to lose 40 pounds before my surgery. So I am going to do the Dr Atkins Low Carb Diet. I know it works well been on it before. My consern is if I do this and 2 months down the road get the surgery and have to go on to a clear liquid diet, then to soft food ect...what happens if the new things I will be eating and drinking contain more carbs than what I am on right now (20grms) a day. Will I gain weight? Believe me when your on a diet such as this one and you go off of it all the weight comes back plus more...yikes!!! PLEASE HELP :)    — Christy M. (posted on November 4, 2002)

I know what you mean about taking in a lot of carbs after Atkins. I don't think you will have a problem though - after surgery. You won't be getting enough carbs etc to bother you. I am 10 months out from wls - am on Atkins for awhile to jump start my slowed down weight loss at this time. I think I would plan not to be in hard ketosis a few days before surgery. I don't know why - just a feeling that you would feel better slacking off then. Probably would not make any dif - since your surgeon is a meanie and says he wants all that weight loss - makes the surgery easier for him and you I guess.

Hi, My doctor wants us to follow the Atkins diet at least one week prior to surgery. He says it will help shrink the liver which will help in the Laproscopic surgery. Kelly*
