Question:
...anything wrong with including baby food in our diets after surgery?
Can I eat baby food sometime during the post-op phase of my recovery after I come home? Which type(s)are "approved" for LAP RNY? — yourdivaness (posted on April 11, 2002)

I just wanted to say that my surgeon and nutritionist actually include
stage 1 and stage 2 baby foods on the post gastroplasty diet for the first
two weeks. Then they add junior (stage 3) babt foods for 2 weeks through 8
weeks post-op. I have eaten quite a bit of baby food so far and as long as
you spice it up a little, the taste is really not that bad.

I would just warn anyone out to use babyfood post op to watch out for
hidden sugar...ingredients listed like "tapioca", and
"starches" and "emulsifiers" are sugars and starches
that we as post ops really don't need to be havng a lot of. If you are
newly post op, this is a perfect time to take "baby steps" in
your new life of label reading for the hidden sugars.

Just be aware of the purpose of baby food and that is to put weight ON an
infant. They are very high in sugar, so can end up making you hungrier
than you were to start.

We were allowed stage 1 only. No hidden sugars. also, the jars are small,
so there wont be much watse. If you do decide to eat this, and cannot eat a
whole jar in one sitting, take out what you will eat and eat it from a
diff. container, your saliva will break down the food amd make it runny,
therefore ruining the whole jar.ie: (it will be icky the next time you eat
it)

I'm 6 months post-op and find Heinz stage 1 "Turkey and Turkey
Broth" handy to add to soups, broth, etc. to pump up the protein
content. It's got 11 grams of protein, no sugar, etc. Baby food carrots
added to tomato soup give all kinds of great nutritional benefit whether a
person has had WLS or not. I'm thinking of blending brocolli, cauliflower,
and all those other wonderful veggies that I can't get myself to eat enough
of...and throwing them into soups, sauces, etc.

I am almost 3 weeks post op and when i came home from the hospital it was
one of the only things i ate on my full liquid diet...well for the first
week anyway... the fruits are really good and fill you up very quickly. i
also had the baby oatmeal made thin with the fruit it was very very good
and was good for a change from broth. if you want u can also add a splenda
to the oatmeal and it taste like regular oatmeal. my faves are the banana,
apple , and strawberry banana...not so good ones are anything
tropical..YUCK! LOL
