Question:
anyone know anything about sugar alcohol
I have found some sugar free snacks (which I hardly crave, but I guess old habits are dying hard). While the sugars are low to none, they are sometimes high in sugar alcohol. Does anyone know anything about this and how it would affect a gastric patient with the whole "dumping syndrome?" — heath1272 (posted on October 14, 2001)

Sugar alachols arent metabolized like regular sugar and should not be a
problem or cause dumping. They are safe.

sugar alcohols also are listed as malitol, sorbitol, or any sugar
substitute ending in ol. While Bob is right that they won't cause dumping
the way sugar does, still be very careful with eating too much of these.
Most packages with these as ingredients carry the warning that consuming to
much of these products can have a laxative effect. With our small tummies
it doesn't take much to cause this. I eat these things myself and mostly am
fine, but I eat maybe one square of the fifty/50 chocolate bar etc. I asked
about this both on the message board and in chat room, and got several
responses indicating the laxative effect has happened to others too. good
luck!
