Stick with the surgeon's& their staffs plan & you will be fine
& make it to your big day. They know best what is best for you and are
there for any questions or concerns. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CALL THEM &
SEEK HELP! That is why they are there. Good luck.

Don't cheat on the diet-keep telling yourself that your surgery will be
safer and easier for the Dr if you stay on track. Also, go through your
closet and prepare to get rid of all your 'fat' clothes-you will be a
skinny one in no time! Good Luck.

Beef or Chicken Broth (I preferred Beef) with Any Whey or Unjury unflavored
protein powder, any flavor of sugar-free jello, herbal tea...Are you on
"liquids" or "CLEAR liquids"? That makes a difference.
I was only on a liquid diet for the day before surgery, and it didn't have
to be clear, so I had this great recipe from my VitaMix for Spinach Soup
made with fresh spinach, garlic, onions and other stuff (I added protein
powder to it, too - Yummy). Also got the IsoPure (adult koolaide-type
stuff, favorite flavor was Grape Frost and Pineapple-Orange-Banana), and
the Oh Yeah vanilla and chocolate shakes. I knew that I liked Lean Dessert
Fresh Cinnamon Bun and Chocolate Coconut Candy Bar, too - but for after
surgery, they were a little too high in calories and fat. I also bought
Syntrax Nectar Protein powders in the Chocolate Truffle and Fuzzy Navel
flavors, but I think I'd probably have preferred the Lemon Tea to the Fuzzy
Navel. Anyway, hope this helps!

The best advice I can give and it worked for me is to "follow the
rules" and when in doubt, ask your doctor what you are not sure of or
if you have any concerns. He and his staff are the experts and know
exactly what to tell you to do. They have seen and heard it all. I would
have no problem asking my surgeon "anything". Good luck to you
and God Bless! Kathy

You don't say what sort of surgery, I had RNY May 18 2009 (lost 98lbs and
reached my goal weight January 2010). The Pre Op Diet was the hardest part
for me. If you can get through that in my opinion everything is so much
easier in comparison. My tips are: follow the advice of your surgeon and
do your homework before surgery so you know what to expect after. Also,
don't rush - take your time with food and make sure you get enough fluid
in. Finally, don't weigh every day, your excess weight will come off
quickly at first but you will also have periods where you plateau
(sometimes for several weeks) and weighing every day gets depressing. Good
luck with your surgery, you will be fine.

I'm 16 days post-op and I would have to say the pre-op diet was the
hardest, especially the first 3 days. I did not feel prepared for the shock
to my system and the painful, aching hunger I felt. But by the 4th or 5th
day it got better as I settled into my Slim Fast High Protein shakes
(Vanilla is the best) and raw vegetables. I just stayed on course and
somehow managed to lose 15 pounds before surgery. I will admit I had 2 slip
ups (last suppers) early on in the diet, but I talked to the nurse and she
helped me better understand the reason for the diet, which is to shrink the
liver and get it out of the way during surgery. This talk helped me I was
able to make through to the end with some decent weight loss. Hang in
there, we have all been there and understand what you are experiencing.
Best of luck to you, you are almost on the other side!

I found I was extrememly weak the first 3 days on the pre-op liquid diet,
but after that passed I was no longer hungry and my cravings were gone! I
am now 3 weeks post-op and stil feel the same way! Don't get discouraged!
Remind yourself that it's only for a short time and it's in preparation for
your surgery - which is going to change your life and health! In addition
to shrinking your liver, this diet also steadies your blood sugar levels,
so you don't have the peaks and valleys that we used to experience.
So hang in there. Everyday you're one day closer to your surgery date!
Note: I would like to share something helpful if your mouth getts dry in
the hospital - either before or after - Lemon Glycerine Swabs! Just ask
the nurse for them. You just swab the insides of your mouth and tongue and
they re-moisturize! Very, very helpful. I pray your surgery goes smoothly!
God Bless

Prepare for your first few days post op. Bandages, clean linens, small
Dixie cups, pill crusher and stuff like that. Sleeping laying flat down
will be almost impossible, so plan on extra pillows to prop you up.
Unflavored protein powder is a great tool to add extra protein to your post
op diet. This pre-op phase will pass soon...post op lasts forever. Spend
your energy preparing for those changes.
