It's different for each person if you are trying to get into ketosis to benefit in your weight-loss. Most people who eat mostly protein, are in some phase of ketosis. You can by keto-stix at any pharmacy, The side of the bottle has a color code from beige to pink to darker pink to purple. The darker the color the more ketones (fat) you are burning. You have to play with it and eliminate carbs to get darker purple. Milk, yogurt and starches have more carbs in them, green leafy veggies are lower. I have to stay below 20 grams to get into a deep ketosis, but someone else might can tolerate 30. Google Ketosis. Also, if you Kroger grocery stores near you, they have a yogurt called, Carb master that is high in protein, 12, low in cals 80, and low in carbs 4grms. Hope this helps.

read this www.livingafterwls.blogspot.com/ Kaye answers"veggies on 5 day pouch" she says "I am pleased that so many people include vegetables and fruit as part of their healthy post-WLS diet. Often labeled "good carbs" vegetables are an important part of our nutritional plan. But I dare say that few people have become out-of-control in a carb cycle eating vegetables or fruit. It is the simple carbohydrates (processed food or starches) that cause a carb-addiction due to the chemical reaction they cause that affects our blood glucose levels. and this www.dietivity.com/on-weight-loss-and-carbohydrates/ Hope either of these help a little, my doc has never mentioned carbs to me, he stresses protein and no sugar, but then I wasn't at my goal yet, so I need to go see him again, but for the correct answer the best thing to do is to ask your weight loss doctor, he can tell you because he is the one that knows how things are going from your tests that he does..Good luck and sorry if I couldn't answer this correctly...gabby

I guess for me being 1 year out I still don't worry about "carbs" much. If I am eating enough protein and still getting in some veggies and fruit I don't have much room for the processed carbs that people consider "bad"... If I am still hungry after my 4 - 5 oz total I add and extra oz of meat or fruit... I just try to avoid the processed types. Very little flour or gluten and I am good.

It is, and always will be much more important for you to count protein grams (minimum of 70 per day) than carbs. If you get the protein in first, your hunger will be gone and carbs won't be an issue. As said below, fruits and veggies are the good carbs and should be second on your menu. The carbs that you want to limit are all processed foods, and all white carbs, i.e., rice, potatoes, bread, pasta. Be careful of staying in Ketosis for a long period of time. It is an abnormal state where your body is literally eating itself instead of food. Large amounts of protein will protect your muscles and hair, while allowing fat to be used. This is critically important.

I am 5 1/2 months out, and I've been told that I need to eat between 85 - 100 grams of protein per day, LESS THAN 120 grams of carbs and LESS THAN 25 grams of fat. I try to keep my carbs below 40, sometimes even below 30, but my nutritionist has a fit, saying that we need the carbs (for instance, the glucose/fructose from fruits) at the beginning of the day in order for our brains to function, and we need the fiber that fruits and vegetables give us (in addition to the carbs they cause us to consume) in order for our intestines to function in a more normal mode.
