Heidal Hernia Repair During Surgery
Has anyone having a heidal hernia repaired at the same time as the RNY? — varedhead1 (posted on July 24, 2009)

I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time as my VG. I don't have any
reflux symptoms now.

Yes, they discovered my hiatal surgery when they were in there doing the
RNY and fixed it. For the first time in years, I don't have heartburn
everyday and panic when I don't have TUMS nearby.

Yes, I had a HH repaired with my laprosopic gastric bypass 6/16/09.
Absolutely no more acid/heartburn issues. But, I'm having a hard time with
introducing solid foods. Getting stuck and throwing up. Not sure yet, if
its the HH still healing or its just the pouch. Everyday is different, so
I'm still trying to figure if there's a pattern. Called my nutritionist and
doing a food diary highlighting bad days and we're gonna try to figure out
what's going on. Will keep in touch.

I had one repaired during my RNY on 5/20 -- one that I didn't even know
that I had. No problems before or after, although I believe the pain from
the hernia repair was worse than the RNY.

I also had a hiatal hernia and my surgeon told me he would fix it when he
was in there doing my LAP RNY. I don't know that it hurt any more or less
than the galbladder removal or the RNY, but I CAN tell you that I'm 36 and
for the first time in probably 20 years, I have not had one onset of Acid
Reflux since my surgery. My doc told me that RNY is really the only way to
"fix" acid reflux for people like me. That alone (well, ok, AND
the weight loss AND the reduced snoring/apnea) has been worth the surgery
at this point.
